During the pandemic, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer became one of the most controversial state leaders in the country.
Her extremely strict stance on lockdowns and other restrictions were among the most draconian in America. And these days, many Michigan residents are hoping they get a new governor.
Well, they might get their wish — and he comes in the form of a Republican police officer.
Whitmer has faced all sorts of backlash in recent months, including calls to resign and lawsuits alleging abuse of authority. All this might give her new challenger plenty of confidence.
His name is James Craig, and he’s a veteran police officer who’s willing to take on Gov. Whitmer. And he’s got some crossover appeal as well, which makes him a potentially strong candidate.
He’s seen as the “top cop” in Detroit and Republicans are crossing their fingers that he’ll score the upset.
Via Fox News:
James Craig, the top cop in Detroit, is expected to announce his candidacy for governor on Monday to take on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer…
Politico reported that Craig, a Republican, could be exciting to the party in the state, which views him as a viable candidate who has cross-over appeal.
The Detroit News cited a source close to Craig, and say he’s already met with “influential Republicans in the state.”
And just recently, Craig appeared on Fox’s “Justice w/Judge Jeanine,” where Jeanine Pirro congratulated Craig for his solid leadership during a tough 2020.
He even has the backing of Michigan Republican Party chairman Ron Weiser, who said: “I think he would make a fine candidate, should he choose to run.”
Former chief of police Ralph Godbee also gave a nod to Craig, saying his experience with public safety gives him a leg up on the competition. Said Godbee:
For a chief of police, just by the nature of what chiefs deal with.
The fact that in a major city, you are on television quite frequently making announcements good bad or indifferent.
(He would have) the name recognition, the comfortability and also the credibility.
Craig has a history of defending the Second Amendment and of course, supporting his fellow men and women in Blue. He’s also received plenty of respect for maintaining order in Detroit while other cites burned.
He’s even called out some of the country’s biggest names.
For example, Craig went after people like Rep. Maxine Waters and LeBron James for their “toxic words” that harm law enforcement as a whole.
He finished by saying: “The vast majority of our men and women do it right.”
These are exactly the sort of statements and ideals that will appeal to Republicans and Conservatives in the state of Michigan, so Gov. Whitmer might have cause for concern.
Of course, statistics still show that Democrats outnumber right-wing voters in that particular state, but given Whitmer’s increasingly controversial standing, Craig might have a great shot.
- Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will have a new challenger for her job.
- It’s Detroit’s “top cop,” James Craig, who has strong support from the state’s Republican Party.
- Craig has defended the Second Amendment, and called out the left’s attacks on law enforcement.
