In the past year, many state leaders have come under fire for the way they handled the pandemic.
It seems Democrat Governors especially have been scrutinized for overly strict lockdowns and other draconian policies.
On top of that, there are lingering questions concerning pandemic-related information and statistics.
All this has come to a head in Michigan, and now Gov. Gretchen Whitmer must once again face a series of difficult questions.
Republicans have clamped down hard on a recent report, which includes what they’re calling a “secret payout behind closed doors.”
Whitmer’s health department director suddenly resigned in January, and now there’s another angle to the story.
From Fox News (citing The Detroit News):
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s health department director is set to receive a $155,506 payout after his sudden resignation in January, and his departure still has not been explained…
The mystery deepens beyond the payout, too.
Health Department director Robert Gordon apparently signed a confidentiality agreement as well, “in the interest of protecting deliberations among government officials.”
Michigan Rep. Steve Johnson doesn’t like how this sounds:
We’re still investigating the things the Whitmer Administration has done during COVID in plain sight, when we find out about a secret payoff behind closed doors.
While it doesn’t surprise me, the deception is shocking and shows how badly this Administration needs oversight so they can be held to account.
Johnson added that Gordon “played an instrumental role” in the state’s epidemic response.
That’s why Michigan taxpayers deserve to know what’s going on behind the scenes, and this includes the reasons behind Gordon’s resignation.
Then there’s that big payout, which appears somewhat mysterious.
So far, Gov. Whitmer hasn’t responded directly to the situation. On Jan. 25, she thanked him for his service during “unimaginable circumstances.”
But with this new development, it seems like she’ll have to answer in more detail.
Taxpayers really do deserve an explanation in this case, and Republicans will keep pushing for an investigation.
- Gov. Whitmer’s health department director suddenly resigned in January.
- Now a report says he received a behind-closed-doors payout of $155,506.
- Republicans demand an investigation into this issue, and say taxpayers deserve answers.
