In Trump’s First Interview After Shooting, He Confesses “By God I’m Still Here”

The world watched in horror as a gunman tried to kill former President Trump. A bullet grazed his ear, revealing how close the killer came to assassinating the Republican. Secret Service agents quickly rushed Trump as a sniper took out the gunman.

Trump was taken to a local hospital, where a doctor examined him. Aside from some bruising, the worst of it was his injured ear.

Soon after the encounter, he flew to Milwaukee to prepare for the Republican National Convention. During the flight, he gave his first interview since the attack. During it, he made an astonishing confession. And he changed some of his plans.

From the New York Post:
A grateful and at times defiant Donald Trump told The Post Sunday he’s “supposed to be dead” as he recalled the harrowing moment a would-be assassin shot at him at a Pennsylvania campaign rally…

“By luck or by God, many people are saying it’s by God I’m still here,” he said…

There’s already some proof of that, as Trump related that his brush with death had changed his mind about the speech he will give Thursday to accept his party’s nomination for the third consecutive time…

He said a new speech was in the works because “I want to try to unite our country.” Folding his arms, he added, “But I don’t know if that’s possible. People are very divided.”

Trump told the interviewer that he should “be dead.” But thanks to God, the gunman’s bullet just grazed his ear. The 45th president has been reflecting on the event, saying he is going to change his tune for his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.

He had planned to give a strong, stern speech against Biden and his failed administration. Trump told the interviewer that he “threw it away.” Instead, he wants to give a speech to unify the country. He believes that “success” will unite the country.

After the attempt on his life, Trump has affirmed his commitment to return to the White House. Pundits and so-called experts will dissect the event, as well as the days and weeks to follow. Investigations will be held to discover how this could have even happened.

It is unknown, right now, how this attack will affect the election. Some might think it will help Trump, but that depends mainly on how he and his campaign respond in the coming days.

For now, it’s clear this event has had a huge impact on Trump. And we might not see how fully it changed him until later.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump gave his first interview since the shooting to the New York Post.
  • The former president said he “should be dead” but that it was a “miracle” he is alive.
  • The Republican threw out his convention speech and will give a new one to unite the country.
