Ever since the unfortunate George Floyd incident, leftist lawmakers and Democrats have pushed to “defund the police.” This typically means rerouting resources to other areas to better combat crime.
However, the Donald Trump administration has been against the idea from the beginning. Most Republicans don’t believe that taking money away from law enforcement is the answer.
Now, Trump wants to “defund the defunders,” so-to-speak.
Several Democrat-run cities have considered cutting police budgets (and a few already have). But in some cases, crime and violent protesting has continued to be a problem.
The President views this is as a failure of local government to protect its residents.
And as such, he wants to start an investigation that could result in federal aid being withheld from any city that allowed “lawlessness” to reign.
Via The Daily Wire:
President Donald Trump has reportedly ordered the federal government to initiate a review that could result in the defunding of four Democrat-controlled cities that have allowed “lawless” behavior to transpire during protests and that have moved to cut police budgets while violent crime has surged.
According to The New York Post, Trump said in a memo that he won’t give tax dollars to cities that “deteriorate into lawless zones.”
He added that the government review of federal funds will determine if jurisdictions “permit anarchy, violence, and destruction.”
Right now, the investigation targets 4 cities: New York, Portland, Seattle, and Washington D.C.
All these cities have seen troubling spikes in crime and civil unrest in recent months. And all are mostly controlled by Democrats.
The investigation won’t end there, either.
The memo says Attorney General William Barr must create a list of “anarchist jurisdictions” that have refused to take the necessary strides to restore order.
Trump specifically called out New York City as well:
While violence has surged, arrests have plummeted. In a 28-day period during the months of June and July, [New York City] arrests were down 62 percent from the same period in 2019.
Amidst the rising violence, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Council agreed to cut one billion dollars from the New York Police Department (NYPD) budget, including by cancelling the hiring of 1,163 officers.
It’s important to note that NYC receives almost $7 billion every year in federal aid. So this could result in a serious problem if the Trump administration cuts them off.
Of course, taxpayers may applaud the move. Their question might be, “why should we help cities that refuse to protect their own citizens?”
- President Trump ordered a new federal investigation into 4 cities. This could result in loss of federal tax dollars for those cities.
- The investigation targets cities that allegedly didn’t take the necessary steps to halt violence.
- A lot of money is on the table. And the 4 cities in question stand to lose millions, or even billions (in the case of NYC).
