From the moment Donald Trump left the White House, people have been asking if he’d return.
The 45th president has teased a possible third run for president. And in recent weeks, that has become more and more a possibility.
But the man has yet to officially announce his candidacy. Nor has he formed a presidential campaign.
People have floated various reasons why. Some think he is watching the 2022 results. Others say he was watching his health.
But Trump himself has revealed why he hasn’t announced a run. And it’s not what you might have expected.
From Western Journal:
Trump said in an interview with Michael Savage that campaign finance laws would make it difficult for him to formally create a presidential campaign.
“I can’t really because of campaign finance rules, regulations, very complicated, very stiff, and frankly very antiquated if you want to know the truth. It’s ridiculous,” he said, according to Breitbart.
Trump revealed in a recent interview he can’t start a campaign too early because of “very antiquated” finance rules.
Campaign finance laws are incredibly strict. These laws restrict how a campaign can its money.
Campaign funds can only be used for campaign events. If Trump announces a presidential campaign now, he won’t be able to use funds for anything else.
The money Trump’s current PAC has raised, $85 million—if put into a presidential campaign—could only be used for that campaign.
If Trump wanted to use that money to, say, help Republicans win in 2022, his hands would be tied.
Could he spend that money to host a rally that was for somebody else? Not necessarily.
So, because of these strict rules, he has to wait. The moment he announces his candidacy, he is limited in what he can do.
For now, he can travel wherever he wants, say whatever he wants, campaign for whomever he wants. And the money raised via Save America PAC can be used to help his allies get elected.
But this statement suggests that in the near future, Trump will in fact run for president again.
