Former President Donald Trump has been rolling along like a freight train heading into the GOP primary season. His campaign is building strength in all aspects from higher poll numbers, finances, and endorsements.
GOP rivals can’t seem to gain ground even as Trump faces multiple legal cases across the country and attempts by Democrats to have him removed from the ballot. Trump maintains strong support among the Republican base, and he has performed well among traditional Democrat voters.
Each stage of the ongoing election cycle seems to bring good news for Trump. This week he garnered an endorsement that arguably could signal the end for GOP challengers. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) endorsed Trump for president.
From Fox News:
“When Donald Trump was President, American workers and families were thriving,” Scalise said in a statement. “The economy was strong and interest rates were low — grocery costs were affordable, and families could afford to buy a house and provide for their children. The border was secure and crime was down. America had secure energy policies, keeping gas and utility prices low.”
Things have been quite different under the current president and Scalise believes Americans are fed up. He is putting his political weight behind Trump to get him reelected.
“I am proud to endorse Donald Trump for president in 2024, and I look forward to working with President Trump and a Republican House and Senate to fight for those families who are struggling under the weight of Biden’s failed policies,” he concluded.
Scalise railed against Biden’s “chaos” that has produced high costs for consumers in gas prices, mortgage rates, and consumer goods. He pointed out that inflation under Biden hit the highest level in 40 years and interest rates are at the highest level in 22 years.
The House majority leader said Americans need “a strong leader to fix the problems Joe Biden has created,” including the southern border crisis and threats from foreign adversaries.
“In Joe Biden’s America, our communities aren’t safe,” Scalise said. “American families and workers deserve a president who will stand up for them and their safety, rescue us from failed Bidenomics, and restore our nation to greatness.”
Trump faces not only his GOP primary rivals but ongoing litigation and mounting attempts to remove him from the ballot from several states.
The former president is fighting criminal and civil charges in several cases that could derail his campaign.
Last month, Fox News reported, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled 4-3 to remove Trump from the ballot over the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots, citing the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, followed suit and removed Trump from the state’s ballot, citing the same clause of the 14th Amendment.
Scalise, who has strong relationships with key GOP congressional leaders, noted that Trump has a proven track record of being able to “save our country and get us back on track.” He believes Trump can get it done again if reelected.
Key Takeaways:
- Trump lands a huge endorsement from House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
- The bayou Republican’s nod could help seal the deal for Trump’s nomination.
- Scalise said Americans need relief from suffering under Biden’s “chaos.”
