Even though the midterm elections are just around the corner, the 2024 presidential election has sprinted back into the spotlight. This is due mostly to former President Donald Trump’s recent scandal.
He’s being accused of taking classified documents from Washington, and the investigation is ongoing. Prior to this, Trump led most internal Republican polls for the potential 2024 nominee.
However, since the well-documented FBI raid, things appear to have changed dramatically — at least in one state.
At one time, Trump was quoted as saying that he might want Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a running mate, and many Republicans agreed that it might be a solid ticket.
And as DeSantis trailed Trump by a large margin in just about every survey throughout most of 2022, Trump/DeSantis seemed far more likely than DeSantis/Trump. But again, the situation seems to have altered.
Back in January, when Florida Republicans were asked about their 2024 pick, Trump led DeSantis by a healthy margin of 7 points.
But after the FBI investigation and DeSantis rising in the GOP ranks due to several bold moves, this poll has flipped on its head. Now, its DeSantis who holds the large advantage.
Via Washington Examiner:
In a new poll of Florida Republicans, former President Donald Trump fell flat against possible 2024 competitor Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
DeSantis now holds a lead of 8 percentage points over Trump, 48% to 40%, according to the USA Today / Suffolk University poll.
This stands in stark contrast to the results of another USA Today / Suffolk poll that was conducted in January, at which time Trump led DeSantis by 7 points, 47% to 40%.
Suffolk University Political Research director David Paleologos said this “doesn’t necessarily mean DeSantis would lead in any other GOP primary state.”
Even so, it does suggest a very clear shift away from the former President. While some ardent followers don’t agree that Trump’s popularity is waning, certain polls are saying otherwise right now.
As more evidence of a DeSantis surge, there’s the hypothetical matchup between Biden and Trump, and Biden and DeSantis.
In this case, while both men are favored over Biden, DeSantis once again has the edge: the Florida Governor leads Biden 52-44%, while Trump leads by just 47-44%.
In regards to the upcoming gubernatorial race, DeSantis also holds a comfortable lead over his Democrat opponent, Charlie Crist: 48% to 41%.
Just this week, we heard a report that said Trump was angry with DeSantis for “stealing” his idea for transporting migrants to Blue states. He also accused DeSantis of trying to grab more momentum for 2024.
Whether or not this is true remains to be seen, but it’s certainly true that Ron DeSantis is the clear pick for President in 2024 in his home state.
That might be expected in Florida and polls could still show something very different in other states, but it does appear as if Trump’s recent difficulties have had a significant impact on his popularity.
- A new poll of Florida Republicans shows DeSantis leading Trump for the 2024 Presidential nomination.
- Trump led by 7 points in January but now the Florida Governor has an 8-point lead.
- While it doesn’t mean we’ll see the same flip in other red states, it’s perhaps more proof that Trump’s approval has waned.
