There’s been plenty of talk about the unprecedented Trump-Biden debate.
It wasn’t what anyone expected and, in a way, was a historic first.
There will be more discussion over what went on for days to come (at least until the next debate).
Some claim it didn’t beat the Trump-Clinton debates from 2016—but they’d be somewhat wrong.
Because this debate was also historic in another way:
More than 73 million people watched the first debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden Tuesday night…
By almost any measure, the audience was massive. Tuesday’s clash was the biggest event on American TV since the Super Bowl last February…
The Nielsen ratings only include Americans who watched on television sets. An unknown number of people live-streamed the debate on their phones, listened on the radio, and watched in other ways, which means the total audience easily surpassed 73 million.
At least 73 million viewers watched the historic debate between President Trump and Joe Biden.
CNN was even forced to admit that didn’t include the undoubtedly millions who streamed it on their phones and other devices.
Which would put this event up there in the record-breaking category.
President Trump also explained it had the highest ratings for cable television:
HIGHEST CABLE TELEVISION RATINGS OF ALL TIME. SECOND HIGHEST OVERALL TELEVISION RATINGS OF ALL TIME. Some day these Fake Media Companies are going to miss me, very badly!!!
Trump also chided the mainstream media, concluding that the high ratings were on account of his appearance.
It is true that even left-leaning media companies have seen an uptick in views, ratings, and subscriptions since Trump entered politics (except, of course, CNN).
It’s hard to say if those high debate ratings would have been the case if it was Joe Biden and a typical Republican candidate.
Many have complained about the overall nature of the debate—with both Trump and Biden mostly arguing and interrupting each other.
But clearly Americans were not turned off. Early responses from actual viewers gave Trump positive feedback, with Telemundo viewers saying he won the night.
- The first Trump-Biden debate was seen by 73 million television viewers.
- The final number will be much higher when adding in online streaming viewers.
- It was the highest viewed event of its kind on cable television.
