At the close of 2023, two states moved to erase Donald Trump from the ballots. That opened the door for other lawsuits to pop up against the presidential candidate.
Republicans have claimed that this trend is an attack on our democracy.
But even Democrats have warned this crusade would backfire. Now, a top Obama ally is speaking about this ballot scheme. This is not what some Democrats wanted to hear.
From Fox News:
Former top Obama adviser David Axelrod warned Friday that a court decision removing former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot “would rip the country apart.”…“I do think it would rip the country apart if he were actually prevented from running because tens of millions of people want to vote for him.”…
“I think if you’re going to beat Donald Trump, you’re going to probably have to do it at the polls,” he continued.
David Axelrod, Obama’s former adviser and campaign manager, warned that attempts to remove Trump from the ballot would “rip the country apart.”
The Democrat strategist said what many within his party have refused to admit. That there are “tens of millions” of Americans who want to vote for Trump. Trying to prevent them from doing so would be seen as a violation of their rights.
What do Democrats think will happen then? Many Republicans have said the same thing Axelrod has said. That erasing Trump from the ballot is close to election interference.
Axelrod went on to say that if Democrats want to “beat” Trump, they’ll have to do it “at the polls.” Ironically, that is what Democrats seem to be afraid of doing. Biden is polling very poorly, even among liberal-leaning groups.
Many have pointed out that keeping Trump off the ballot could be the only way Biden wins re-election, given his many failures.
Axelrod could be prodding his party into finding someone else to run in November. He has previously criticized Biden’s performance and warned about his lagging poll numbers. This latest warning could be a veiled message to this party: find someone else to run against Trump.
Key Takeaways:
- Top Obama advisor David Axelrod criticized attempts to remove Trump from the ballot.
- He said those moves would “rip the country” apart, considering Trump’s many supporters.
- Axelrod said the only way Democrats can beat Trump is at the polls.
