Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), a member of the far-left “Squad” in Congress, is reportedly under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly misusing government funds meant for private security.
The news broke after a subpoena announcement was read on the House floor on Monday. Sources have indicated that it was related to the investigation of Bush.
Bush’s response was that the Department of Justice was “reviewing” her campaign’s spending on security services. She denied any wrongdoing related to paying her now-husband Cortney Merritts for private security after they were married. Bush quickly blamed “right-wing organizations” for the law enforcement probe.
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), a watchdog group, defended filing a federal complaint regarding alleged repeated payments by Bush to her now-husband. Reports indicate that Bush spent more than $500,000 on her private security while promoting defund the police initiatives.
“Among the many troubling facts involved that we strongly felt justified an investigation were her close personal relationship, her large payments to others for the same services at the same time, and that her husband reportedly didn’t have a license to provide those services,” FACT executive director Kendra Arnold said in a statement.
Bush faces this investigation and other federal complaints related to how she paid for security services over the last few years.
