The 2024 primary cycle has been vicious, at best. Several top politicians have fought ruthlessly for time and attention. In most of the GOP debates, candidates have just sunk to attacking each other.
One candidate, considered a long shot, showed just how ugly this race could get.
He was preparing a town hall event where, incidentally, he was going to announce his withdrawal from the race. But while he waited for the event to begin, his hot mic picked up comments he made about another candidate. And it was not flattering.
From Mediaite:
…A microphone suddenly turned on as [Chris] Christie was mid-sentence, and he proceeded to say that Haley was “going to get smoked.”“I mean, look, she spent $68 million so far, just on TV. Spent $68 million so far, $59 million by DeSantis. And we spent 12. I mean, who’s punching above their weight, and who’s getting a return on their investment, you know? And she’s going to get smoked. And you and I both know it. She’s not up to this,” he said.
Before his streamed event, Chris Christie’s microphone came on mid-sentence. The Republican was discussing Nikki Haley and her presidential campaign. He criticized Haley’s strategy. Pointing out that she’s spent large sums of money, with little return.
He went on to say that Haley is “going to get smoked.” The former governor said that Haley is “not up to this.”
Republican candidates quickly reacted to Christie’s embarrassing hot mic moment. Ron DeSantis agreed with Christie when he said that Haley was “going to get smoked.” Trump also appeared to agree with him calling it a “very truthful statement.”
It is unclear at this time how Haley responded. Haley and DeSantis are only a few Republicans still running for president against Donald Trump. According to polls, they are close with each other, but still very much behind Trump.
Haley has been heavily criticized for statements she’s made about free speech and social media. Some Trump supporters have called her a “globalist” and worse. She has received large donations from Democrat donors, who are trying to knock Trump out of the race.
Key Takeaways:
- Chris Christie had a hot mic moment while talking about Nikki Haley.
- He said that she is “going to get smoked” and that she is “not up to” running for president.
- Other Republicans piled on, including Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump.
