Liberal-run cities around the country have defied the will of the people to defund the police.
Some cities have slashed millions of dollars from cops’ budgets. That will only result in fewer cops, with less training and equipment.
In the heart of Texas, Austin’s city council joined the left-wing radicals to take $150 million from their own police department.
But Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is not about to let them get away with it:
“You’ve seen and you have documented what happened in Portland, in Seattle, in Chicago, New York, and cities across the country,” Abbott told host Sean Hannity. “Now Austin, Texas, has defunded law enforcement [and] police … despite the fact that over the first six months of this year, the city ranked number one in the United States for the highest percentage increase in murders was Austin, Texas.”
So what is Abbott going to do to stop them and any other cities that try this?
“[T]hey will lose the lifeblood of the revenues they receive from property taxes in Texas,” Abbott explained. “What this does, in English, is it is going to defund cities and cities’ ability to operate at all if they try to defund law enforcement.
After Austin’s radical city council voted to take $150 million from the police department, the governor vowed to freeze their revenue from property taxes.
Abbott is working on a move that will prevent any Texas city that defunds police from receiving revenue from state property tax.
Although Texas is largely conservative, several of their large cities have been infiltrated by left-wing activists.
Austin has become the poster child of rich, liberal elites along with Bernie Bros and socialist hipsters. It faced some of the worst riots and violence in the state, during the Summer protests.
It’s clear that the city council is trying to mirror other left-wing cities, who defunded the police in a pathetic attempt at appearing “woke.”
They did this, despite the fact that remarkably few Americans want police departments defunding. Some surveys reveal 81% of Americans don’t want cops defunded, with 83% black Americans who want more cops on the street.
Gov. Abbott is using the power of his office to hold reckless cities accountable. Austin is home to millions of Texans. It is also a college town, with many young students attending from all over the world.
Defunding the police would put millions of innocent civilians at risk. Crime is already high in the city. Defunding the cops would make it much worse.
- Austin’s city council voted to defund their police, taking away $150 million.
- Abbott is promising to freeze property tax revenue to cities that defund police.
- A large majority of Americans are against defunding the local police.
