What’s Happening:
In recent days, the Supreme Court has been handing down plenty of important rulings.
While not all of them conservatives agree on, many have given Americans big wins.
And, to the surprise of plenty of Republicans, the decisions were unanimous.
Well, here is another big win for for the little guy: this time it’s student athletes across the country. The Supreme Court just made a decision that will have a big effect on their careers and make a big change in school sports.
From Fox News:
The Supreme Court ruled in a unanimous decision Monday that the NCAA has illegally restricted education-based benefits that could be used as compensation to student athletes…
“To the extent [the NCAA] means to propose a sort of judicially ordained immunity from the terms of the Sherman Act for its restraints of trade—that we should overlook its restrictions because they happen to fall at the intersection of higher education, sports, and money—we cannot agree,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the court’s opinion.
The court ruled in favor of student athletes. They determined the NCAA unlawfully restricted the kind of benefits schools can provide students who play on their teams.
Gorsuch, when writing the court’s opinion, stated that schools can still forbid the paying of salaries or other “outlandish gifts.” But they cannot hold back other forms of education-based compensations.
That includes anything that would contribute to a student athletes’ academic career, including scholarships, laptops, and similar benefits.
While the ruling allows schools to stop at paying athletes, Justice Kavanaugh opened the door for further scrutiny.
The case is a big win for student athletes, who perform under intense pressure. Often their athletic demands take away from their education, costing them their futures.
Schools, meanwhile, made tremendous amounts of money from these sports. They had sponsorships from major companies while coaches could earn millions.
It seems like the students in this case weren’t trying to bilk schools out of their cash, but just fair support for all they do.
It’s important to note that, once again, the court was united in its ruling for students. That’s a good sign that both conservative and liberal justices were in agreement.
This doesn’t seem to be a political issue. It is an issue that affects potentially thousands of American college students.
The fact that both wings of the court agreed, means that perhaps they will unite on other larger issues.
Do you support this unanimous decision?
Key Takeaways:
- The Supreme Court ruled in favor of college athletes fighting for more benefits.
- The court’s decision was a 9-0 vote knocking down the NCAA’s cap on what schools offered.
- The decision limits benefits to what would further an athlete’s education.
