Joe Biden has talked about ruining the Supreme Court a long time. But it looks like Democrats in the House just jumped the gun.
Biden set up a “bipartisan” panel to explore the idea of court “reform.” That includes the possibility of packing the Supreme Court with more judges.
The goal is obvious: to erase Trump’s conservative majority and give Democrats control of all three branches of our government.
And now, House Democrats are forcing the issue with a new bill.
Democratic lawmakers on Thursday introduced a bill in the House to expand the Supreme Court from nine to 13 justices.
The bill would allow President Biden to immediately nominate four people to fill the new seats, reshaping the balance of power on a court that became solidly conservative after three vacancies were filled by former President Trump.
Interestingly, Nancy Pelosi—a woman who craves power for the left—isn’t ready to hold a vote on it. But she’s not ruling it out either:
But it’s not only Republicans against this obvious power grab. Even some top Democrats are against it.
This is what Biden once said about it. From the Daily Wire:
“But it was a bonehead idea. It was a terrible, terrible mistake to make, and it put in question for an entire decade, the independence of the most significant body, including the Congress, in my view, the most significant body in this country, the Supreme Court of the United States of America.”
Key liberal judges were against it, including RBG. As well as Justice Breyer.
Even socialist Bernie Sanders has been against the idea of packing the Supreme Court. He warned that if Democrats do it now, there’s nothing stopping Republicans from doing the same thing in the future.
We also have to wonder if Congress actually has the power to pack the court through legislation. The very reason the Supreme Court exists is to prevent Congress and the White House from wielding too much power.
For Congress, a branch that is meant to be held in check by the court, to alter the court seems to contradict the very purpose of our Constitution.
Then, we have to keep in mind the fact that the Supreme Court has the power to overrule any legislation passed by Congress and signed by the president. So, even if Congress gets this bill through—does anyone think the SCOTUS would really support it?
But it’s all a moot point, anyway. With the 50-50 split in the Senate, Democrats would need 60 votes to bypass the filibuster to even get this thing to Biden’s desk. And that’s unlikely to happen.
What this does tell us, though, is how determined Democrats are to expand their already over-expanded power over this country—forever. And how much we need Republicans to right the ship in 2022.
Do you think Democrats should try and pack the court?
- House Democrats proposed a bill to add 4 new justices to the Supreme Court.
- Numerous lawmakers oppose the bill, including Democrats and judges.
- The bill is unlikely to get passed due to Pelosi stalling and the current split in the Senate.
