What’s Happening:
Three rounds of voting and House Republicans have yet to select a new Speaker. Thanks to the actions of Rep. Matt Gaetz and seven others, the lower chamber of Congress has been in free fall for three weeks.
The House is unable to conduct any business, as war erupts in Israel and Americans continue to struggle with numerous crises.
Two candidates have failed to secure enough votes. Both Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan failed to win support from the entire party. Now, as many as nine Republicans could be vying for the job–as the House remains paralyzed.
From Just the News:
Nine new Republican lawmakers have thrown their hat in the ring to become the next speaker of the U.S. House. Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik released the list of candidates, who had until noon Sunday to announce their candidacy.
Nine new possible candidates, which underscores the uncertainty of the House’s future. It’s unclear why a small group of Republicans have refused to back Scalise or Jordan–both respected members of the party.
But the crisis drags on. Former Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, is blasting those responsible for this chaos. And he’s issuing a warning.
From Daily Wire:
“Well, that’s embarrassing,” McCarthy responded. “And you’ve got to understand why we are here. Eight Republicans, led by Gaetz, have created this chaos by joining every single Democrat in voting to shut down one branch of government.”
McCarthy is not alone in criticizing Gaetz and these Republicans. Democrats are known for uniting, despite deep divides. Yet these eight Republicans refuse to cooperate with the party, seemingly to advance their own careers. And others believe it will only serve to help Democrats, come next year.
From Fox News:
Republicans’ race to nominate and elect a new speaker of the House has created a power vacuum that may benefit Democrats as the vacancy spills into its 20th day…As the speakership race continues, Democrats have been fundraising off the turmoil, arguing that the upcoming election cycle will yield favorable results for Democrats.
“Republicans are in ruin,” Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal said in an email seeking donations for her next run, Bloomberg reported. “They are wallowing in their own pigsty of incompetence.”
Thanks to attention-seeking Matt Gaetz, Republicans are being mocked and railroaded by Democrats. They are already fundraising off the chaos, preparing their attacks for 2024. Republicans only have a slim majority in the House.
This fighting will ensure a major minority after 2024.
Key Takeaways:
- Republicans continue to fail to find a new Speaker, as nine candidates float their names.
- Kevin McCarthy warned Gaetz’s treason is “embarrassing” the entire GOP.
- Democrats are fundraising off the chaos, building their case to win in 2024.
