If you’re on Social Security or know someone who is, then this information is for you.
In the middle of this crisis, Congress passed and Trump signed a major relief bill that will be sending checks to Americans who need it.
But the IRS put a difficult stipulation on many seniors, saying they would need to file a simple tax return if they wanted their check. Well, they just reversed course.
From Fox News:
After initially saying that Social Security recipients would have to file a “simple” tax return for 2019 — which they ordinarily would not do — the IRS now says the payment will be automatic without it.
“Social Security recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return … will receive their payment directly to their bank account,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin announced Wednesday evening, noting that they will not have to take any action.
Well, thank goodness!
Being forced to file a tax return, even a simple one, could have been quite a burden on seniors who don’t need to.
And, in a real surprise, this push actually came from dozens of Democrat senators. Looks like a broken clock can still be right twice per day.
So, for anyone on Social Security, no need to worry about a tax return. If you qualify for the relief check, you won’t need to file a tax return just to get it.
