As we push on into 2022, the nation remains concerned about the hottest topics: inflation, the economy in general, the border crisis, and the pandemic top the priority list.
But for Democrats, that priority list features another item: the Senate filibuster. Leftist politicos have been waging war on the historic D.C. rule, and they’re not letting up.
And that’s exactly why Republicans just sent over a little gift.
Though Democrat leaders continue to stand against the filibuster, right-wing officials know there’s little chance of losing that 60-vote threshold. Most don’t think the filibuster will disappear in 2022.
That hasn’t stopped Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from trying, though.
In fact, Schumer is pushing a vote in the Senate to abandon the legislative rule, which has been a roadblock for Democrat policy for a while. The GOP says this is the only reason Democrats want it gone.
The filibuster has stopped several far-left policies from getting through, which has been a thorn in the side of the progressive agenda.
That’s why National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Chris Hartline believes Democrats want the filibuster out:
It doesn’t really have anything to do with the legitimacy of the rule, as he said earlier (via Fox News):
It’s not about the rule itself. It’s about why they do it. They’re not trying to change the rules so they can more easily name post offices.
They’re trying to change the rules because they can’t pass their crazy agenda without changing the rules.
Schumer is still forcing vulnerable members to vote on it, though. And Hartline believes this is a gift for Republicans.
It’s such a gift, in fact, that he said late last year that if Schumer goes down that path, “I think we’ll send him a gift basket or something.”
Well, that’s exactly what they did:
This “thank you” arrived at Schumer’s office, and it’s bound to ruffle a few feathers.
But Republicans feel comfortable in their position, and are convinced Schumer’s plan to ditch the filibuster will fail. It’s a difficult vote for some members to take, even if Schumer doesn’t seem to care.
The bottom line is that Schumer and other leftist leaders want to ram through their two big election bills. And they’re willing to do whatever it takes.
As Schumer said on the Senate floor earlier this week:
As we debate these measures, the Senate will confront the critical question:
Shall the members of this chamber do what is necessary to pass these bills and bring them closer to the president’s desk?
Today we have just taken the first steps that will put everyone, everyone on the record.
Democrat citizens also blame the filibuster for halting the progressive agenda in its tracks, while right-wingers are thankful the rule is in place — and will likely remain in place.
Election integrity will certainly be a hot topic of debate once again this fall, when the midterms roll around.
Currently, a “red wave” is predicted as Republicans are poised to reclaim control of the House, and might also flip the Senate. So right now, it feels like Democrats are in damage control mode.
- Republicans sent a gift basket to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, for forcing a vote on the filibuster.
- Schumer is asking vulnerable members to make the tough vote, and Republicans are confident that this plays into their hands.
- Democrats want to remove the filibuster, as it has been a roadblock for progressive policy.
