Usually, if something is named after you, it’s quite the honor. But it’s unlikely Rep. Ilhan Omar will appreciate her latest “honor.”
House Republicans just introduced new legislation and though Omar isn’t specifically mentioned, it’s obvious she inspired the bill.
It’s called the “OMAR Act.”
For months, right-wing politicians and lawmakers have been concerned about Omar allegedly funneling money to her husband’s business.
They’ve accused the Minnesota Democratic representative of a major ethics violation, and now that accusation has resulted in this legislation.
And it’ll be interesting to see how (or if) Omar responds to it.
Via The Daily Wire:
House Republicans have introduced legislation seeking to stop federal candidates from enriching their spouses or immediate family members by adding them to their campaign payroll, pointedly dubbing it the ‘OMAR Act,’ or the Oversight for Members and Relatives Act.
House Reps. Tom Tiffany and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin brought the legislation into the spotlight.
In a press release, they cleverly avoided mentioning Ilhan Omar’s name, but they certainly made it clear:
Tiffany and Gallagher cited a “House member from Minnesota,” who allegedly took advantage of an existing loophole and sent a reported $2.8 million to her husband’s consulting firm.
But this act would put a stop to all that.
At its core, the legislation says candidates for office can’t use their campaign accounts “to enrich their spouses.” Said Tiffany:
For too long, lawmakers of both political parties have engaged in the ethically dubious practice of pocketing campaign funds by ‘hiring’ their spouses and laundering the money as campaign related expenses.
He added that “it’s outrageous and inappropriate” for Congress members to change campaign donations into personal funds.
Tiffany finished by saying the rule would of course apply to all candidates, regardless of political affiliation.
Gallagher used even stronger words, saying that funneling campaign funds to spouses is “despicable” and it “erodes trust in our government.”
We’re still waiting to see if Omar gets punished for her possible violation.
But in the meantime, Republicans are taking action to stop it from happening again.
- Wisconsin Republicans introduced new legislation called the “OMAR Act.”
- They’re trying to stop federal candidates from funneling campaign money to their spouses.
- The GOP is calling the practice “despicable” and it erodes citizen faith in the government.
