For millions of Americans, the #1 issue is undoubtedly the economy. Some say we’re on the brink of a major recession, while other experts claim we’re not in a recession yet but it’s definitely coming.
Recent reports have painted bleak pictures of the holidays, with the average cost of goods and services rising at an alarming rate.
At a time like this, the U.S. budget plays a central role in the argument. Increased government spending and other economical issues have a direct impact on that budget, and the country is paying attention.
Now, Republican leaders are demanding that President Biden hit a critical deadline — if he doesn’t, they’re prepared to act.
A group of House GOP members have hit Biden with an ultimatum regarding budget deadlines.
Led by Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter, two bills have been introduced, and they outline possible punishments if Biden doesn’t move quickly. This is a strong move that might prompt POTUS into action.
Via The Daily Caller:
A group of House Republicans, led by Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter, introduced two pieces of legislation Tuesday that would enforce the executive branch’s budget deadlines by restricting pay and travel if the president is unable to meet budget deadlines.
The first bill is called the Presidential Accountability for Yearly Submission of the United States’ Budget (PAYSTUB) Act, and would withhold all politician salaries until the budget has been submitted.
That’s a definite eye-opener: nobody gets paid until Biden submits a budget for review.
The second bill is titled the Presidential Budget Accountability Act, and that freezes funds for travel. This would hinder Biden from moving around the world if the budget isn’t solidified.
Said Rep. Carter:
Without an enforcement mechanism in place, budget deadlines are mere suggestions.
Like households and businesses across the country, the United States government cannot function properly without a budget – look no further than the $31 trillion in national debt for proof.
We need the PAYSTUB Act and the Presidential Budget Accountability Act to pass so we can send a message to the American people that balancing the budget is our top priority.
Carter added that America is “reeling from the effects of fiscal recklessness,” which is why these accountability acts are so important.
The GOP has accused the President of ignoring the budget deadline before, and now they’re trying to get Biden to speed things up. Republicans believe taxpayers deserve that much effort, at least.
While the White House says the deficit will shrink in 2022, that’s mostly due to dramatically reduced spending from the pandemic. Biden’s team has taken credit for this, however.
At this point, we need a budget and if the public doesn’t see one, that could further damage the President’s reputation.
Right now, the public opinion of the President is quite low, as his approval ratings have once again declined after a brief upswing during the summer.
And anything related to to the country’s financial position is bound to get a lot of attention, especially with the energy crisis ramping up in Europe and holiday difficulties around the corner.
