Ever since the George Floyd incident, Democrats have been pushing for law enforcement reform.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was one of the first to support the “defund police” movement, for example.
To be fair, AOC and other Democrat leaders have since clarified this concept:
It generally doesn’t mean removing all police; rather, it means cutting the amount of funding they receive and focusing more on other means of deterring criminal behavior.
But now, Ocasio-Cortez is going after a new group: the military.
Via The Daily Wire:
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has proposed stripping federal funding from military recruitment programs that operate in middle and high schools.
This is actually her second proposal that involves defunding the military in some form.
She recently pushed the idea of barring the military from advertising “on Twitch.tv or any video game, esports or livestreaming platform.”
However, neither of these amendments have been officially accepted.
If accepted, they would be added to the defense spending bill, though it’s still uncertain if her proposals will receive a vote.
AOC believes the military unfairly targets “children in low-income communities,” and added:
In many public high schools where military recruiters have a daily presence, there is not even a counselor.
As a result, the military stops feeling like a ‘choice’ and starts feeling like the only option for many young, low-income Americans.
Whether or not she’s right, it will still have to be put to a vote.
Some may also view her comments as more of an attack on the military itself — and the implied suggestion that the military can’t make people’s lives better.
We’ll have to see if AOC can push her controversial proposals further.
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants to defund military recruiters from schools.
- She believes it unfairly targets low-income children, and makes it feel as if they have “no choice.”
- She also doesn’t want the military to advertise on certain platforms, though both amendments would require a vote.
