Last week’s bombshell Durham report left Washington reeling: it seemed to clear former President Donald Trump of any Russian collusion accusations, which Democrats have cited for years.
Now, many of those accusers have been forced to eat their words, even though some maintain that it doesn’t “completely” exonerate Trump.
One of those accusers is taking a lot of heat, though — and that’s because she used the term “cold hard evidence.”
It’s former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was one of several high-ranking politicos in D.C. who ran with the Trump/Russia collusion story.
Back in July 2017, Pelosi was quoted as saying the following:
This week we saw cold hard evidence of the Trump campaign, indeed the Trump family, eagerly intending to collude, possibly, with Russia, a hostile foreign power, to influence American elections.
At the time, she was referring to news of Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer in Trump Tower, a meeting that was ultimately cleared by the Mueller investigation.
Pelosi demanded that then-Speaker Paul Ryan create a new commission “to get to the bottom of the Trump campaign’s role in Russia’s assault on our democracy.”
Well, the Durham report has done an admirable job looking into that issue, and now Pelosi might have to issue some sort of retraction. We’re not getting one so far, though (from Fox News):
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has remained tight-lipped after Special Counsel John Durham’s report showed glaring missteps by the Department of Justice and FBI when it launched the Trump-Russia investigation.
Pelosi’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Fox News Digital this past week with regard to her response to Durham’s report that found ‘the Department and the FBI failed to uphold their mission of strict fidelity to the law’ during the origins of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation.
Pelosi’s office also wouldn’t respond to the question of walking back her previous accusations.
It’s the “cold hard evidence” part that’s really haunting the former Speaker in this case. Politicians and journalists were talking about this as if it were fact, or at least pending fact.
And the Durham report — along with other evidence turned up since that time — seems to have completely wrecked the Trump/Russia collusion theory. In fact, many are just calling it a straight-up lie at this point.
Pelosi even tweeted once that “our election was hijacked … there is no question.”
It’s pretty obvious that she bought into the Russia conspiracy theory, and continued to link Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As for the Durham report, this statement is of particular significance:
In particular, there was significant reliance on investigative leads provided or funded [directly or indirectly] by Trump’s political opponents.
In other words, it was all cooked up by Trump’s enemies, which is what much of the GOP has been saying for a long time.
And whether or not Pelosi ever admits she was wrong is probably irrelevant — she’s got egg on her face here, and Americans in the know are well aware of it now.
