In the past, leading Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) spoke out against the practice of gerrymandering. That’s when you manipulate electoral maps to favor a particular party.
In fact, Pelosi is on record calling for an end to gerrymandering, saying it “compromises the integrity of our democracy.” And other Democrats definitely agreed with her.
However, it seems she’s caught in the midst of a serious flip-flop.
Pelosi’s leadership PAC, “PAC to the Future,” is sort of a family operation. Nancy’s husband, Paul, oversees the finances for the PAC. There’s nothing wrong or illegal about this arrangement.
But the group’s actions are raising some concerns now.
That’s because it appears the PAC supports exactly what Nancy Pelosi condemned — redrawing electoral maps to favor a certain political party. In this case, of course, the Democrats.
Via Washington Free Beacon:
After calling for an end to partisan gerrymandering, House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) quietly funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to former attorney general Eric Holder’s effort to redraw electoral maps in favor of Democrats, filings show.
The total amount involved isn’t a small number, either:
PAC to the Future reportedly sent $300,000 to Holder’s National Democratic Redistricting Committee in late 2020.
Holder’s organization is preparing for a redistricting process that comes around only once every 10 years. And it dramatically affects which party controls Congress.
This has also led to delays, caused in part by the census statistics that have yet to come in (via Politico).
No matter how you view the situation, it appears Holder’s group is – and has been – leading a push for leftist gerrymandering, and the Pelosis are supporting it with $300K.
It’s also interesting to note that Holder’s Committee received a huge six-figure contribution from George Soros’s Democracy PAC, and that’s bound to rile right-wing lawmakers and citizens.
On top of this, it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that Holder’s group is made up almost entirely of left-wing individuals.
The Redistricting Committee was created by former President Barack Obama, Pelosi, and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and focused on “breaking up Republican-controlled legislatures.”
Now, they’re clearly pushing to redraw electoral maps and Pelosi’s $300K is going to help that effort.
The question is, does this qualify as direct hypocrisy? Is Holder’s organization pursuing the textbook definition of gerrymandering?
If so, it seems the Speaker might have some tough questions to answer in the near future.
- Nancy Pelosi reportedly funneled $300K to former AG Eric Holder’s Redistricting Committee.
- They apparently want to “redraw electoral maps” to favor Democrats.
- If this qualifies as gerrymandering, it reflects badly on Pelosi, who specifically called out the practice in 2019.
