Nancy doesn’t just want Trump gone. She wants him behind bars.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is off the impeachment bandwagon—now she wants Trump in jail.
On Tuesday night, House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, an outspoken impeachment supporter, wanted to know if Pelosi still agreed with his stance.
Pelosi replied that in fact, she doesn’t merely want to impeach President Donald Trump.
She wants to go a step further.
According to multiple sources, Pelosi and other key Democrats “are aggressively pursuing investigations against the president.”
She stated clearly (via Politico):
“I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison.”
Democrats have been going back and forth on the impeachment debate for months, with some resisting such a drastic step without public support or strong bipartisan backing.
However, Pelosi wishes to push beyond impeachment and hold the President accountable for his alleged crimes.
Many of her colleagues weren’t surprised by the Speaker’s statements, as Pelosi has been increasingly critical of Trump in recent weeks.
As one example, she’s on record saying the Commander-in-Chief’s actions “are villainous to the Constitution of the United States.”
Furthermore, it appears Pelosi’s office is prepared to act: spokeswoman Ashley Etienne told the New York Post:
“They agreed to keep all options on the table and continue to move forward with an aggressive hearing and legislative strategy, as early as next week…
…to address the president’s corruption and abuses of power uncovered in the report.”
The Democrat Caucus remains at odds on the issue, though, as committee leaders like Nadler aren’t satisfied with the current approach.
Pelosi still faces pressure on both sides; from fellow Democrats who aren’t prepared to follow her forceful strategy, to Conservatives who say there is no basis for impeachment or prison.
For his part, President Trump has resisted and railed against any potential investigations into his administration and continues to maintain a position of staunch innocence.
Still, nearly 60 Democrat members want to immediately pursue impeachment proceedings.
Whether or not they eventually leap aboard the prison bandwagon with Pelosi remains to be seen, but the Speaker remains adamant:
“Make no mistake, we know exactly what path we’re on,” she said. “We know exactly what actions we need to take.”
