House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan kicked off a firestorm of criticism and backlash, as many claim it was a mistake. And China’s reaction to the visit appeared to be somewhat frightening.
Pelosi has since made a few questionable comments, despite maintaining that she stands for Taiwan and against the Communist Party in China. And her most recent slip-up definitely raised some eyebrows.
Her office claims the Speaker just misspoke — but her critics won’t let her forget it any time soon.
It doesn’t help that she made the mistake during a live interview with NBC News. She appeared to not only defend China, but added a claim that confused a lot of people.
Via The Daily Wire:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) faced backlash online Tuesday after she said during an NBC News interview that communist China was ‘one of the freest societies in the world.’
‘We still support the One China policy. We go there to acknowledge the status quo is what our policy is. There was nothing disruptive about that.
It was only about saying China is one of the freest societies in the world.’

These statements quickly made the rounds on social media, and many high-profile individuals fired back immediately.
This included Donald Trump Jr., who said on Twitter:
Pelosi thinks that the Communist Dictatorship in China is ‘one of the freest societies in the world,’ which may explain why the Democrats are now emulating the same authoritarian tactics here at home, that the Chinese Communist Party uses against their political opposition!
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) added the words “unbelievable,” “scary,” and “idiotic.”
Former Trump White House adviser Steven Cheung said that it’s “disturbing to see anyone, let alone an elected official, repeat Chinese Communist Party talking points. It’s almost like she is compromised.”
Of course, many assumed she meant to say Taiwan, and this was corroborated by Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, Drew Hammill. As he wrote on Twitter:
The Speaker is referencing Taiwan.
The Speaker’s record of speaking out against the Chinese Communist Party for 35 years in the Congress is unsurpassed.
Pelosi penned an op-ed that ran in the Washington Post, supporting Taiwan and saying that the U.S. would defend Taiwan if they were threatened.
But it isn’t the first time Pelosi has made a blunder since returning from her trip. She told a controversial “digging to China” story that didn’t go unnoticed, and she seems to be prone to more errors lately.
Even if she did mean to say Taiwan, some will say this is another sign of an aging elected official population, which has become more and more concerning with Joe Biden in office.
- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a bad gaffe during an NBC News interview.
- She said China is one of the “freest countries in the world,” though her office later clarified saying that she meant say Taiwan.
- The mistake still seems concerning to many, and others say it’s more proof that Democrats are becoming more like Communist China with every passing day.
