With the election looming, Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar has thrust herself back into the spotlight. Jumping on the defund police bandwagon, the left-wing congresswoman has raised eyebrows with her support for radical changes to the country.
The self-proclaimed socialist recently called for the “dismantling” of any American economic and political systems affected by racism.
But now, she’s in the spotlight for an entirely different reason. It appears her campaign gave almost $900K to her new husband’s company:
Rep. Ilhan Omar has plowed hundreds of thousands of dollars into her husband’s consulting firm over the past two years, financial records show.
The Minnesota Democrat’s campaign paid Tim Mynett $292,814 in 2020 for advertising and research services, among other consulting measures, Federal Election Commission filings show. The New York Post was the first to report Tuesday on Omar’s contributions, which show she has paid Mynett’s firm $878,930 since 2018.
Democrats tend to be the first to complain about how money is spent in politics. Even Omar’s allies, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have lamented “dark money” that influences campaigns and policy.
Yet we frequently see questionable actions by the very same Democrats. AOC has had her own campaign financing troubles. Now, it appears Omar has paid nearly $900,000 on “advertising and research services” to a firm run by her husband.
This is the same man who left his wife to marry Omar. His former wife, Beth Mynett, accused the man of cheating on her with the congresswoman.
While it is not illegal for a campaign to work with a family member’s company, many criticize the practice. Campaign financing laws are strict and bring with them harsh penalties (including jail time). That is designed so that candidates can’t funnel campaign funds into personal accounts.
Yet when a spouse is profiting off those campaign funds, the waters certainly appear muddy. Omar’s campaign paid her own husband $878,930 for research. Any critic of the Democrat could easily claim she was just shifting cash from her campaign into a family member’s pocket.
This should certainly warrant an investigation. In recent years, House Democrats have been quick to launch probes into anything that smelled fishy by Republicans. Will they not do the same for a member of their own party?
