After Newsom Forces Stay-At-Home Rule In California – His L.A. Sheriff Turns On Him, Says He Won’t Enforce The Order

Across the country, governors continue to enact new guidelines and rules designed to combat the pandemic. But as was the case earlier this year, some citizens are pushing back.

Business owners especially have been in a difficult situation for most of 2020. And law enforcement officials have been hesitant to enforce some of the stricter edicts issued by political leaders.

Now, these two issues have come to the forefront in California.

Recently, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a new statewide stay-at-home order, which directly impacts businesses. Once again, many doors will be forced to close.

However, one sheriff says he won’t enforce the order against businesses. And he may have good reason to refuse, as he claims Newsom and state officials never coordinated with police.

This has resulted in a significant clash.

Via The Daily Wire:

On Thursday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva reportedly asserted that he won’t force his deputies to enforce a new statewide stay-at-home order against businesses issued by California Governor Gavin Newsom and state health officials.

One of the reasons why Villanueva won’t enforce the order is simply because he was never told about it beforehand.

As KTTV’s Bill Melugin tweeted:

Melugin added a statement from Villanueva, where the sheriff clearly sided with local businesses. He believes they’ve done everything they could to follow guidelines to this point.

As such, they shouldn’t be punished even further:

I want to stay away from business[es] that are trying to comply, they bent over backwards to modify their operations to conform to these orders and then they have the rug yanked out from under them, that’s a disservice.

I don’t want to make them more miserable.

Villanueva also said he doesn’t believe restaurants and other businesses are to blame for the recent surge in virus cases.

Instead, he blames the Lakers and Dodgers celebrations for contributing to the uptick. But regardless of how it happened, everyone in the state is now affected.

Newsom’s order requires residents to “stay at home as much as possible” and everything from salons and barbershops to bars, movie theaters, and restaurants must remain closed.

At this point, only outdoor services can be held at places of worship, which is another sore spot for many citizens of faith.

But in the end, Gov. Newsom does not have the backing of at least one sheriff and again, it appears he has his reasons.

Key Takeaways:

  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new stay-at-home orders directly impact state businesses.
  • L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva won’t enforce this order on businesses, however. He believes they’ve already “bent over backwards” to follow guidelines.
  • He also doesn’t believe these businesses are responsible for the state’s latest surge in cases.
