Once upon a time, Mitt Romney played the conservative. Back then, he had to, because he was running for president.
He apparently wanted us to forget that for years as Massachusetts governor, he played nice with East Coast liberals.
During Trump’s time, the Republican often showed his true colors. Sometimes he was a conservative. Sometimes he sounded like a D.C swamp rat.
But now that the political winds are changing (for now), he is flipping again.
And his new plan makes Bernie Sanders look like Ted Cruz. From Fox 13:
U.S. Senator Mitt Romney has announced a proposal aimed at modernizing and streamlining a number of “antiquated” federal policies to create a monthly cash benefit for American families with children…
“The Family Security Act would provide a monthly cash benefit for families, amounting to $350 a month for each young child, and $250 a month for each school-aged child,” according to a summary of the proposal.
The new bill would allegedly “streamline” current welfare programs by just giving families free checks.
It would provide $350 per young child and $250 for each school-aged child.
Romney claims this bill will instantly lift 3 million children out of poverty. Of course, he’s ignoring a few things.
First, there is the inconvenient reality that giving out money spreads poverty, it doesn’t cure it. Most people stuck on welfare never get off it, finding steady jobs that would provide much more income.
Plus, Romney seems to forget that such a massive tax burden would drag many other families into poverty. This kind of welfare would hit middle-class business owners the most, forcing them to lay off workers.
The tax burden would end up hitting middle- and working-class families because, let’s face it, the left’s socialism programs never really affect the “one percent.”
Naturally, Romney is hyping up the “good” parts of this plan, but doesn’t focus on how much it will cost. It’s a shock to see a so-called Republican calling for such blatant socialism, without focusing on better alternatives.
Under Trump, millions of Americans were lifted out of poverty, after tax cuts enabled companies to hire more workers.
Big companies increased salaries and charitable contributions. Now, we are going back to a time when the government enfeebled Americans, as jobs are evaporating before our eyes.
Do you think Romney should switch that “R” beside his name to a “D?”
- Republican Mitt Romney is proposing a massive new welfare program for poor families.
- It would provide $350/month for each small child and $250/month for children in school.
- Romney claims this would help, but did not explain all of it would be paid for.
