Michigan Senate Just Subpoenaed Governor Whitmer – They Order Her To Turn Over All Nursing Home Records

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has faced mounting backlash and criticism for her handling of the pandemic. Some voters and state residents have accused her of abusing her authority.

She certainly instituted some of the strictest guidelines and rules in the country during 2020, and now the state government is wondering if her policies had a negative impact.

That’s why they Michigan Senate just slapped Whitmer with a subpoena.

Much of America knows about embattled New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s nursing home scandal. But it seems Cuomo isn’t the only one who might be involved in a nursing home problem.

While Whitmer consistently said her draconian rules were designed to stop the spread of the virus, the truth might be very different.

And the Michigan Senate Oversight Committee wants answers.

They want a “clearer picture” of how Whitmer’s policies impacted the death rate in the state’s adult and long-term care facilities. The Governor will have to respond to this request at some point.

Via The Daily Wire:

Michigan’s Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer may soon be forced to turn over documents relating to her administration’s COVID-19 nursing home policy.

On Thursday, the Michigan Senate Oversight Committee voted to subpoena nursing home records from the state’s health department…

According to the Detroit News, Oversight Chairman Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan) requested documents from the Department of Health and Human Services on March 2.

But so far, they haven’t released any records at all.

McBroom wants communications reports from state health department employees, concerning Whitmer’s nursing home policies during the pandemic.

For some reason, though, these records remain under lock and key. It’s interesting to note that Whitmer’s policies were similar to those of Cuomo’s, and he’s been under fire for months.

It’s not the first legal move against Whitmer regarding nursing home policies, either.

Journalist Charlie LeDuff and other interested parties announced they were suing the state to release that information. They claim Whitmer is hiding this info from the public.

This could be bad news for Whitmer, as it has been for Cuomo.

It’s important to remember that Republicans in Michigan wanted the Governor to send COVID patients to separate facilities, and not funnel them back into nursing homes.

But apparently, this didn’t happen and now, the state Senate and others demand records and answers. They are running into a big problem, however:

LeDuff said in a USA Today op-ed that Whitmer’s office is “largely exempt” from the Freedom of Information Act laws, which is why it’ll be a struggle to obtain the records they seek.

Even so, it probably needs to happen.

The residents of Michigan deserve to know if Gov. Whitmer’s policies had an adverse affect on the state’s elderly population, and the courts might just agree.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Michigan Senate Oversight Committee slapped Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office with a subpoena.
  • They’re demanding she release nursing home records from the state’s health department.
  • A separate lawsuit also seeks this information, as they allege that Whitmer’s policies might’ve had a terrible impact on the state’s nursing home population.
