File this under, “The Mainstream Media Flops Again.”
Major news networks have a pretty bad reputation for getting basic facts right, these days. But this latest story is just so incredible, we had to bring it to you.
We all know Mike Bloomberg blew over $500 million on his failed presidential campaign. The pundits on MSNBC were trying to visualize just how much money that really is.
They wanted to illustrate that he could have used that money on nearly anything other than politics. And it would have been a better investment.
I would agree with that.
The problem? They got the math really, really wrong.
From Fox News:
If someone had simply stopped and double-checked some math, they might have saved MSNBC’s Brian Williams and New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay some embarrassment and an apology Thursday night…
Trouble is, the post had gotten the math all wrong – yet neither Williams nor Gay seemed to notice.
MSNBC’s Brian Williams reads a tweet: “Bloomberg spent $500 million on ads. U.S. Population, 327 million. He could have given each American $1 million”
NYT Editorial Board Member Mara Gay: “It’s an incredible way of putting it. It’s true. It’s disturbing”
It’s $1.53 per person pic.twitter.com/dIiwCESgh8

Yikes. Now, I’m no math whiz, but even I know this was wrong. Brian Williams and his guest showed a tweet that said with $500 million, Bloomberg could have given every American $1 million each.
Um… not right. Not by a longshot.
In fact, $500 million would have only given each American around $1. Not as impressive, huh?
What’s really shocking is that MSNBC didn’t bother to check this very basic math before the segment.
Don’t they have calculators in their offices? It took me a total of 0.5 seconds to check that math.
Is this the standard for news coverage, these days? Did Brian think that because he’s no longer on NBC Nightly News, it doesn’t matter what he says?
Hey, it’s only MSNBC, right? It doesn’t have to be accurate!
Seriously, guys. This is embarrassing. We don’t do TV at Patriot Journal, but we are rigorous with fact-checking.
Why can’t MSNBC do the same level of editing than a humble website?
Maybe you’re better off avoiding them, and just reading us?
