It’s clear Democrats have no intentions of working with Republicans in the Senate. But they can only get so much done through the “nuclear option.”
When reconciliation doesn’t work, they’ll be forced to cooperate with Republicans. Democrats hate that idea so much, they are back to talking about getting rid of the filibuster rule.
Even Joe Manchin, who refused to kill it previously, is now saying the filibuster should be “hard” to use.
But Mitch McConnell has dropped a bomb on Democrats. If they dare eliminate the filibuster, they will sorely regret it.
From Fox News:
“So let me say this very clearly for all 99 of my colleagues. Nobody serving in this chamber can even begin to imagine what a completely scorched-earth Senate would look like,” McConnell said…
“I want our colleagues to imagine a world where every single task, every one of them, requires a physical quorum. Which, by the way, the vice president does not count in determining a quorum. This chaos would not open up an express lane for liberal change … The Senate would be more like a 100-car pileup, nothing moving.”
McConnell is warning Democrats that if they dare get rid of the filibuster to force through their agenda, they will face serious backlash from Republicans.
The senator explained that, instead of the “fast-track” leftists were hoping to achieve, the Senate would look more like a 100-car pileup.
He warned that Republicans would make it very hard for Democrats to get anything done. Conservatives would require a physical quorum to get anything done.
And if Democrats thought Harris would bail them out with her tie-breaking vote, that wouldn’t matter under these circumstances.
McConnell also reminded Democrats of what happened when they eliminated the filibuster for judicial appointments. He told them, back then, that when the Senate flipped back to Republican, they’ll regret it.
And they did. President Trump was able to get every last nominee confirmed, with zero support from Democrats.
It would be just like that, but much worse, given this filibuster would relate to passing legislation.
He said that once Republicans regain the majority, they would “erase every liberal change” Biden manages to get done in the next two years.
And he’s not fooling. It happened under Trump and it would happen again under the next Republican president.
But do you think Democrats will heed his warnings?
- McConnell warned progressives of what would happen if they eliminated the filibuster.
- He predicted Senate would become a 100-car pileup with nothing getting done.
- He also warned them that Republicans would erase their progress when they regained the majority.
