Up until recently, many experts and insiders predicted that Republicans would easily flip the House and likely reclaim control of the Senate.

However, things have tightened up since then, and now some GOP leaders are sounding the alarm: while they still predict a House flip, they’re warning that they might not retake the Senate after all.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell recently told reporters that Republicans probably won’t win the Senate due to issues with certain GOP candidates.

That’s when former President Donald Trump decided to sound off on the matter.

Trump went on Truth Social and sent McConnell a blistering reply, calling the Senate Minority leader a “broken down political hack,” and questioned his loyalty to the Party.

He also said that McConnell “openly disparages hard-working Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate.” This isn’t the first time Trump has called out McConnell, and it probably won’t be the last.

Donald is referring to McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who owns a shipping company that reportedly does a lot of business with China.

McConnell maintains that Senate races are different than House races because they’re “statewide” and “candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.”

Currently, the Senate is split 50-50 but Vice President Kamala Harris holds the tie-breaker and that basically means Democrats hold sway in that chamber. The GOP only needs a net gain of 1 seat to retake control.

They need a net gain of 5 in the House, though that seems more likely to happen at this point, according to McConnell and other experts and journalists.

As for McConnell’s position, most believe he’ll be re-elected as GOP leader no matter what happens in the midterm elections. This doesn’t sit well with some right-wing citizens, though, as support for McConnell has cooled.

The midterm elections come around in November and while most are predicting closer races than predicted earlier in the year, it still appears as if the GOP will get the House back.

However, getting the Senate – and the Presidency in 2024 – may rely firmly on how the economy fares in the near future. If gas prices climb again in the fall, as some experts are predicting, that alone could pose a big hurdle.
