Matthew McConaughey, although famous for his success in Hollywood, is generally respected for his patriotic stance on America.
A native Texan, he has frequently offered a voice of reason and unity during these very divisive times. Although his particular party allegiance isn’t clear (he might be a moderate Democrat), he has floated the idea of running for office in his own home state.
But what do Texans think? Does McConaughey have a chance at becoming, perhaps, the governor of the Lone Star State?
One poll is shedding some light on it. From Fox News:
Now, in a new poll conducted by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, it seems the people have spoken. McConaughey has a commanding lead over Abbot, with 45% of those polled saying they would cast their vote for him versus 33% who would stick with Abbott.
Twenty-two percent said they would vote for someone else.
According to this new poll, 45% of voters would pick the actor over the current governor, Greg Abbott.
While this is far from a legitimate survey (since McConaughey hasn’t announced a run), it does suggest he would have a strong base if he did enter politics.
McConaughey is a likable actor and is popular in his native state of Texas. During the last year and recent Texas Winter freeze, he and his wife were out helping people in need.
His recent memoir, Greenlights, garnered high marks and accolades.
But what could really determine his fate is which party he sides with. With his overall moderate views, he might have trouble winning a primary from either party.
It’s clear that these days, Democrats are embracing radical leftists who cling to socialist policies. In a very public race like the governorship of Texas, the party might not want someone in the center.
But in the traditionally red state, McConaughey might have trouble winning over conservatives. The state did go for Trump in 2020 (by a good margin, better than the pundits had expected). And Republicans might rather support a man like Abbott, who is fighting to protect the border and their 2nd Amendment rights.
All this is academic for now. McConaughey has not officially announced any kind of race.
If he did, though, it would become a very interesting race indeed.
