Democrats have wanted to conduct an investigation into the January 6 incident for months. And they just recently announced a “Select Committee” that would in fact probe the Capitol Hill riots.
However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stopped a couple high-ranking Republicans from joining the Committee. She called it an “unprecedented decision.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) calls the entire situation something else — a “sham committee.”
That’s why McCarthy and his fellow GOP members are turning the tables on Pelosi and her colleagues. If Democrats won’t allow Republicans to be part of their investigation, they’ll conduct one of their own.
It all started when Pelosi vetoed Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-IN). Pelosi claims she denied these two for the sake of the “integrity of the investigation.”
But that excuse isn’t flying with McCarthy.
Instead, he wants to investigate the big questions, and he’ll use his own team to do it. Pelosi would have to reverse her decision and allow all five of McCarthy’s picks, if his team was going to participate.
That likely won’t happen, though. So they’re striking out on their own (via Breitbart):
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) vowed Wednesday to investigate questions surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot independently of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) “sham” select committee after the speaker vetoed two of McCarthy’s committee appointees.
McCarthy ripped the Democrat selection as being a “sham process,” and further claimed they “lost all legitimacy.”
He also added a scathing question of his own:
We will run our own investigation.
Why are you allowing a lame duck speaker to destroy this institution? This is the people’s House, not Pelosi’s House.
As for the two questions McCarthy and his fellow GOP members wish to investigate:
The first is, “Why was the Capitol so ill-prepared for that day?” The second is, “What have we done to make sure that never happens again?”
Regardless of who was involved or the reasons behind the event, we definitely need these questions answered. No matter what, that just can’t be allowed to happen again in a civilized, law-abiding society.
Democrats seem more interested in assigning blame and doling out punishments.
And while it’s important to determine the responsible parties, it’s arguably more important to come down hard on security. To many, that day represented a shocking failure of government security.
This is precisely what McCarthy and Republicans want to tackle.
Pelosi’s committee now consists of eight members, seven of whom are Democrats. And the other is the controversial Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who has been accused of being a RIINO multiple times in the past.
That’s why Republicans feel like they’re being squeezed out. But clearly, they’re prepared to take action themselves.
- After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vetoed two Republicans for her Committee, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy vowed to start his own investigation.
- Republicans want to focus on the security issue concerning the Jan. 6 riots.
- McCarthy ripped Pelosi and accused people of “allowing a lame duck speaker to destroy this institution.”
