Despite Joe Biden’s control of the Democratic Party, he keeps having to deal with one wrinkle: Joe Manchin.
This moderate Democrat from West Virginia (a red state) has opposed numerous proposals from his radical colleagues.
He refused to kill the filibuster. And it seems Manchin will also oppose partisan spending bills.
Now, he standing up to another move by this radical administration.
From Fox News:
Sens. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., sent a bipartisan letter to the leaders of the Senate Appropriations Committee urging them to protect the Hyde Amendment and maintain this “long-standing provision” in the Fiscal Year 2022 bill…
The Hyde Amendment is a long-standing Medicaid amendment that prohibits federal taxpayer dollars from going toward elective abortions except in cases of rape, incest or the mother’s life being in danger.
Democrat Senator Joe Manchin joined Republican Roger Wicker in rejecting an attempt to remove the Hyde Amendment in the upcoming budget.
The rule prevents Medicaid dollars from being used on elective abortions, outside of extreme circumstances.
It was a compromise made between Republicans and Democrats since 1976, to prevent federal dollars from funding this practice.
We learned recently that Democrats were trying to get rid of this amendment, as well as other rules, that stop tax dollars from going to abortion.
Apparently, Democrats think they can ram whatever radical agenda they want through the Senate and Joe Biden would just approve.
But with Joe Manchin supporting the Hyde Amendment, there is little chance it will get removed.
His support means he might not vote for a budget that eliminates this rule, which could kill the chances of it getting passed.
As a moderate Democrat in a 50-50 Senate, Joe Manchin has suddenly been given tremendous power. Although he often sides with his party, he has frequently voiced support for compromise and bipartisan deals.
With his vote, he can single-handedly bring Biden’s agenda to a standstill.
Are you glad Manchin is standing up to Biden?
- Joe Manchin voiced his support for protecting the Hyde Amendment.
- Democrats have talked about eliminating this rule in the upcoming budget.
- Manchin’s vote can decide the fate of many bills in the Senate.
