Life and finances among the elites who inhabit major universities in America have come to light in recent weeks. Ivy League schools are apparently rolling in the dough while the average American deals with sky-high inflation and many work 2 jobs.
Harvard University is an example of this wealth after donors pulled tens of millions of dollars in donations. Harvard was exposed after former school president Claudine Gay was called on the carpet for her indecision in dealing with rampant antisemitism on campus. She ultimately resigned earlier this week after she was also accused of multiple counts of plagiarism.
Everyday Americans might expect that Gay would be sent packing with a pink slip. But it appears the elites in academia take care of their own even after a scandal. Gay is still set to get her pay.
From The Daily Wire:
Claudine Gay may have been forced to resign her post as president of Harvard University on Tuesday, but she may still rake in a massive six-figure salary of nearly $900,000 from the Ivy League school.
A New York Post report revealed that Gay may simply slip back into a position as a professor or a dean of the faculty. Gay reported income of $824,068 in 2020 and $879,079 in 2021. The report showed how she might have broken the seven-figure mark had she remained president as her predecessor amassed a $1.3 million payday in 2021.
Gay’s quick exit made her the shortest tenured Harvard president in history. She held the position starting in July. Her controversial Capitol Hill testimony regarding rampant antisemitism on campus and increasing allegations of plagiarism in her published academic works preceded her resignation.
Gay tried to characterize herself as a victim in her resignation letter. She claimed that racially charged attacks from critics were designed to demean her. She failed to address her testimony before Congress or alleged plagiarism that filtered through more than half her academic published works.
Her congressional testimony, and that of other Ivy League university presidents, sparked outrage. She suggested that “context” was necessary to determine whether calls for genocide against Jews violated Harvard’s stance against bullying and harassment.
It’s arguable that everyday Americans don’t have much empathy for rich elites who get forced out of one job and still walk away with a new position and big paycheck.
Key Takeaways:
- Harvard University president’s resignation caused controversy over her paycheck.
- Claudine Gay walked away from her top job but is likely to return to another cushy, high-paying position.
- Her stance on calls for violence against Jews and alleged plagiarism sank her tenure.
