Democratic Governor Gets Heat from Her Own Party – New Mexico’s Grisham Gets Pushback for Gun Carry Suspension Order

What’s Happening:

More people from all walks of life and throughout the political spectrum are speaking out against a blue state governor who decided to “suspend” constitutional rights. The decision has people marching in the streets while politicians and famous celebrities are calling for the governor’s removal.

At question is the governor using a supposed public health emergency to suspend rights of everyday Americans who have done nothing wrong. Liberals have joined conservatives in calling out the governor’s order as a direct violation of the Constitution.

Fox News reported that Democrat New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is coming under fire from members of her own party after temporarily suspending open and concealed carry across Albuquerque under an emergency health order.

Lujan Grisham temporarily suspended open and concealed carry laws in Bernalillo County for at least 30 days, starting Sept. 8. The announcement was spurred by the fatal shootings of young children, including a 13-year-old girl in July, a 5-year-old girl in August and an 11-year-old boy this month.

Lujan Grisham claimed fear was driving the order with people afraid of participating in activities due to the “prospect of violence at every turn.”

Her order was met with swift and harsh condemnation from politicians and citizens across the country. The order essentially tosses aside the Constitution and strips citizens of their rights, and that is not acceptable, according to Sen. Ted Lieu (D-CA).

“I support gun safety laws,” Lieu said on X social media. “However, this order from the Governor of New Mexico violates the U.S. Constitution. No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. There is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution.

Public officials elected by the people are expected to follow the Constitution and they swear an oath to do so no matter what the political trends in society. Lujan Grisham’s order was even criticized by liberals. Gun control activist David Hogg responded on X that he “agreed” with Lieu and Grisham’s order won’t stand legal muster.

Conservatives and social media critics mocked the governor for losing liberal support and expressed shock over the governor’s actions and the agreement among gun supporters and gun controllers.

The situation prompted marches of armed citizens in an Albuquerque historic district and calls from New Mexico Republicans to impeach Lujan Grisham. Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block called the governor’s order an “abhorrent attempt at imposing a radical” agenda on law-abiding gun owners.

“Even Grisham believes this emergency order won’t prohibit criminals from carrying or using weapons; a basic admission that this will only put New Mexicans in danger as they won’t be able to defend themselves from violent crime,” Lord said.

Second Amendment groups quickly filed lawsuits to stop the governor’s overreach. The president of The National Association for Gun Rights said Lujan Grisham “is throwing up a middle finger to the Constitution.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Blue state governor suspends constitutional rights of citizens.
  • Governor said her order is needed because people are living in fear.
  • Liberals and conservatives agree that the governor’s order won’t stand.
