Leftist Democrats for years called for the defunding of law enforcement across the country. While some have backed off that demand, there are plenty of leftists still shouting in public to bring down cops by taking away their financing.
The message from these leftists is that the people don’t support the police and they want to dismantle law enforcement protections while promoting actions of criminals. The result of defunded police departments has universally been a total failure as crime spiked.
Republican members of Congress want to turn the tide against the defund the police movement and shut down the leftists. New legislation was put before Congress to make sure the country continues to support police.
From the Washington Examiner:
Several lawmakers have criticized President Joe Biden’s policies in particular, and a handful of congressmen who worked in law enforcement decided to do something about it. Reps. Clay Higgins (R-LA), Pete Stauber (R-MN), and Mike Ezell (R-MS) are just some of the retired officers who have authored pieces of legislation to assist the men and women in blue who work on behalf of their communities. The legislation set to hit the House floor includes addressing anti-police attacks, expanding the concealed carry right of police officers, protecting police in the line of duty, and deporting illegal immigrants who assault law enforcement. One bill focuses on supporting the mental health of those who serve.
GOP members made their voices heard during a special event supporting law enforcement. Republican lawmakers highlighted the importance of law enforcement, especially as some Democrats nationwide continue to argue for other services to replace peace officers.
Republicans in the U.S. House “will proudly back the blue,” according to Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who spoke during Peace Officers Memorial Day on Wednesday. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) added, “These officers exemplify the American spirit; they are the best of us.”
During the event, Sheriff Chad Bianco of Riverside, California, spoke on behalf of law enforcement leaders. He criticized the notion that “in this alternate universe, law enforcement officers are the bad guys, and criminals are somehow victims of society.” Bianco explained that the rule of law is “a requirement of a civilized society.”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said police officers are “the only reason I’m here today before you, alive.” He recounted the 2017 House baseball practice shooting and how police officers came to his aid after he was shot, and how they protected House members both Democrat and Republican.
Scalise hopes both sides of the aisle will remember how officers saved their lives, regardless of party affiliation. Republicans will look to their Democrat counterparts to gain bipartisan support of the legislation.
As Memorial Day draws closer, passing such legislation would be an honorable and patriotic show of support for law enforcement across the nation.
Key Takeaways:
- House Republicans proposed legislation that supports law enforcement nationwide.
- The measure follows GOP participation in the Peace Officers Memorial Day event.
