The Goodyear company has been on the hot seat for several days now. A leaked slide from an employee training course recently went viral, as it suggested possible discrimination.
The slide allegedly revealed a policy where “Black Lives Matter” and LGBTQ apparel was acceptable, but not Blue Lives Matter or All Lives Matter.
Goodyear quickly clarified by saying the material “was not created or distributed” by the company.
However, they couldn’t deny the slide didn’t exist. And now it seems they’ll have to respond to another piece of leaked evidence.
This time, it’s a leaked audio snippet obtained by WIBW (via The Daily Wire), and it features employees talking about discrimination policy.
While they say employees are allowed to express their views, it appears that certain viewpoints may not be welcome.
Here’s the segment that’s raising eyebrows:
Some people may wish to express their views on social justice or inequity or equity issues such as black lives matter or LGBTQ pride on their face coverings, shirts or wristbands.
That will be deemed approved because it applies with a zero-tolerance stance.
However if any associate wears all, blue, white lives matter shirts or face coverings, that will be not appropriate.
That appears to be a cut-and-dry explanation — they will allow a particular stance, but any other political or social views apparently aren’t about “equality.”
The speaker, who remains unidentified, claims the rules were created for the sake of a “better work environment.”
However, many are already condemning this as largely discriminatory and perhaps a violation of the First Amendment as well.
While businesses can certainly have differing employee policies, they should remain 100 percent equal and tolerant. These statements seem to suggest otherwise in regards to Goodyear.
There’s also another important question:
Is it even legal for an employer to tell an employee he or she cannot express certain views…? That might fall under heavy scrutiny.
Perhaps it’s safer for an employer to simply say, “leave your political views at home.” But even that could prompt issues in today’s increasingly sensitive world.
In the end, though, it looks like Goodyear is once again going to have to answer some difficult questions.
- Leaked audio from Goodyear employees suggests possible discrimination.
- An unidentified employee said that while Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ pride apparel is acceptable, “all, blue, or white lives matter” apparel is not.
- There is a potential legal issue here, and it seems clear that Goodyear will have to respond to the situation.
