President Trump has long criticized “mail-in” voting, warning it could lead to trouble.
His biggest concern has been the possibility of voter fraud. But he’s also recently claimed that mail-in voting could delay the results of the election.
New York is proving him right. Over a month after the primary election, they still don’t know the results of two races—thanks to mail-in ballots.
So, the president is calling for a redo:
President Trump on Monday urged New York to re-run its June 23 primary election in the 12th Congressional District, which still hasn’t produced a winner as thousands of mail-in ballots have been tossed or remain uncounted.
Of course, Democrats in the state ignore Trump’s urging. But hours after Trump’s comments, a federal judge has made a controversial move:
A federal judge ordered election officials to count thousands of mail-in ballots throughout New York State that were declared invalid for not having a post-mark or arriving at offices shortly after the June 23 primary.
A federal judge in Manhattan is requiring that thousands of mail-in ballots that were rejected have to be counted.
These ballots were disregarded because they came in late or were not post-marked in time.
This is one of the biggest concerns for mass, mail-in voting. (Since when has the Post Office been on time?)
Politicians claimed that voters were “disenfranchised” because, after being encouraged to vote by mail, their ballots weren’t counted.
I guess whoever “encouraged” them to vote this way didn’t bother explaining to them that they had a deadline to mail it by!
The ruling might be an omen for the November election. While many more people will be voting (and many will be most-likely voting in person), a scenario could arise where—in some states—the results are delayed by months.
This is the very scenario Trump is warning against. This is one of the many reasons he opposed mail-in voting.
Democrats ignored his warnings. But even they have to see how this situation could hurt their chances.
What if Biden could have gotten thousands of more votes—but they were lost in the mail?
Shouldn’t that urge Democrats to reject mail-in voting? Can’t they encourage their supporters to just go to the polls?
- After Trump warned against mail-in voting, a federal judge demands discarded ballots to be counted.
- Mail-in voting can lead to fraud or delayed results, warned the president.
- Democrats have ignored Trump’s concerns, even as states struggle to roll out mail-in voting plans.
