My, how the mighty have fallen! Just a few years ago, the last entry into Disney’s Toy Story franchise made hundreds of millions of dollars in the U.S.—one billion worldwide.
The most recent film, Lightyear, focused on the origin story of the beloved character, Buzz. And, since moviegoers are returning to theaters in huge numbers, this should have been a massive hit.
There’s just one problem: Disney pushed their woke again in the family film.
And it bombed, big time.
The experts who watch the box office said Lightyear would gross $70 to $85 million domestic and do another $50 to $60 million offshore for a worldwide opening of $135 million. Instead, the Toy Story origin story crash-landed with a $51 million domestic opening and only an additional $34 million offshore, for a pathetic $85.6 million worldwide haul.
A Disney/Pixar, Toy Story movie only making $85 million on opening weekend (worldwide)? That is an epic disaster.
But the numbskulls in Hollywood are totally clueless. And they are making up hilarious excuses.
Blame the fact that it doesn’t appeal to girls, blame Disney+ for stealing family moviegoers, blame the lack of an ensemble Toy Story cast, heck, blame everything as Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear didn’t do its magic by internal studio or industry standards this weekend with $51M, close to a third below its lowest $70M pre-release projection.
Deadline, an industry website, has blamed nearly everything to explain how Lightyear bombed in theaters.
Except for the obvious reason, American families did not want to see a “kids” movie with a woke topics in it.
Word spread for months that Disney deleted kiss (between two women who have a child). But in response to Florida’s parental rights bill, Disney put it back.
It seemed to be a bitter “F-you” moment for a Hollywood studio that has come out as pushing an agenda.
Apparently, this was enough for millions of Americans to stay home. Hollywood, though, ignores it.
The industry can’t blame the bomb on people not going to movies. The box office has exploded this year.
Jurassic World Dominion—the third movie in the rebooted series—was top of the box office two weekends in a row.
And before that, Tom Cruise’s patriotic triumph Top Gun: Maverick defied expectations to be top in the box office on repeated weekends (and has made $900 million worldwide).
It seems painfully obvious that Americans (and moviegoers worldwide) were turned off by Disney using this beloved franchise to push a woke agenda.
(And the fact that they replace the longtime voice of Buzz, Tim Allen, with Chris Evans.)
This is a massive loss for Disney. But will they learn from it and remove leftism from their future movies?
We’re not too sure.
- Disney’s “woke” Lightyear movie bombed at the box office, making only $51 million.
- Hollywood refuses to acknowledge the scene is to blame for the loss.
- Meanwhile, patriotic politics-free Top Gun Maverick has made over $900 million.
