Ohio Gov. DeWine Signs New Law: Single-Sex School Bathrooms Can’t Be Used By Opposite Gender

What has become known as “the bathroom controversy” continues to rage on Capitol Hill. Those who don’t believe gender identity is tied to biological sex sit on one side of the argument, while those who believe in only two genders based on sex sit on the other.

It’s perhaps most controversial when schools become involved: should members of the opposite sex be allowed to use single-sex bathrooms, if they “identify” as that particular sex?

The trans community continues to push for their concept of equality in this issue, but many oppose the idea, saying it makes things very uncomfortable for everyone involved. And when schools are concerned, many parents don’t want their child seeing a member of the opposite sex in the bathroom.

Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) just sided with those parents and other opposing members of the argument.

He has signed a bill that will effectively ban anyone who isn’t a member of the designated sex from that bathroom. It’s bound to cause yet another stir among far-left individuals and Democrats in the state, but it’s a done deal now.

Via Washington Examiner:

Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) signed into law a bill that bans members of the opposite sex from using single-sex restrooms at schools.

The bill affirms that schools from kindergarten through college must ‘designate each student restroom, locker room, changing room, or shower room that is accessible by multiple students at the same time … for the exclusive use by students of the male biological sex only or by students of the female biological sex only.’

DeWine made no statement when signing the bill, which will go into effect on February 24, 2025.

As of that date, all Ohio schools must clearly label every bathroom, and that bathroom is only available to those who are biologically of that sex. Those who “identify” as that gender but were born the opposite sex aren’t allowed in.

Republican state representative Adam Bird, who sponsored the legislation, thanked Gov. DeWine for the decision, saying it was “an important legislation” that “keeps students safe.” GOP Rep. Beth Lear added that she was “grateful” for the new bill:

We are grateful to the Governor for doing what is right and what is best for all Ohio students in kindergarten through college.

The Protect All Students Act will keep our children safe from exposure to the opposite sex while in private spaces.

Ohio is one of several battleground states that went red in the 2024 election, so Gov. DeWine may have more support for this than he might’ve had a few years ago.

The bathroom issue is one of the many critical topics that potentially spurred Republicans to victory in that election. Many claim that millions of Americans are simply fed up with the endless parade of “woke” ideologies – some of which have now become laws – that have taken hold in a stunningly short span of time.

They say none of this reflects reality, common sense, or science, and even some Democrats are starting to think it might not be the best talking point for the party.

Catering to the fringe, and trying to make believe people the fringe isn’t the fringe, could be a big reason why the red wave hit so hard this year. Which is why Gov. DeWine’s bill isn’t likely to be the last of its kind in the country.
