In the past week, legendary children’s author Dr. Seuss has become the latest target of progressive Democrats. They claim some of his books portray racist and insensitive imagery.
As a result, 6 Dr. Seuss books have been removed from publication — “canceled,” in fact. And this “cancel culture” is precisely what many Americans continue to push back against.
And perhaps surprisingly, this might also include former President Barack Obama.
Obama is certainly a Democrat and a proponent of many progressive policies. So it might stand to reason that he’d support this assault on Dr. Seuss and his “discriminatory” books.
But based on Obama’s past words, it doesn’t seem like he could support this move.
During Obama’s tenure in the White House, he and First Lady Michelle Obama frequently praised Dr. Seuss in front of children, as his books were commonly used to encourage reading among our youth.
Now, those quotes are turning heads. From Fox News:
The then-president said in 2015 that ‘pretty much all the stuff you need to know is in Dr. Seuss’ while speaking to a group of White House interns, emphasizing Seuss’ message of inclusivity written into many of his children’s books and naming ‘The Sneetches’ and ‘Horton Hears a Who’ as examples.
‘We’re all the same, so why would we treat somebody differently just because they don’t have a star on their belly?
If I think about responsibility, I think about Horton sitting on the egg up in the tree while Lazy Mayzie’s flying off, doing whatever she wants. Know what I mean?’
This sounds 100 percent positive, doesn’t it?
But Obama didn’t stop there. Several years later in 2018, Obama spoke to author and philanthropist Dave Eggers, and he delivered yet another pro-Seuss quote:
I’ve been quoted saying this sometimes. Most of what you need to learn you can actually just, read Dr. Seuss.
It’s all pretty much there.
Obama and other Presidents seemed to fully embrace Dr. Seuss books on Easter and on National Read Across America Day, when schools celebrate Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday on March 2.
Obama said in 2009 that Dr. Seuss’ books “inspire children throughout the world to read.”
And there was never any mention of “racist or insensitive” material, either from the Obamas or any other Democrat at the time.
But now we live in a world where 6 of the beloved author’s books will no longer be produced, simply because a certain group deemed them inappropriate. It seems this group has immense power…
They question how Dr. Seuss portrayed his characters (many of which aren’t human, by the way), and that’s enough to cancel the books completely.
It does appear overblown and a huge over-exaggeration, as many shocked parents and even educators are now saying.
- After “cancel culture” stops 6 Dr. Seuss books from being published, former President Barack Obama’s words come to light.
- He was clearly in support of Dr. Seuss many times during his time in the White House. He even said “most of what you need to learn” you can find in Dr. Seuss.
- This runs counter to the progressive argument that the books have “racist and insensitive imagery.”
