What’s Happening:
Why do we call D.C. the “swamp”? Because the city is full of career politicians who use the government to get filthy, stinking rich. One of the reasons they end up doing this, at the expense of hard-working Americans, is they are far too powerful.
Some people, like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, have been in Washington for decades. They secure a seat in Congress and they never leave. And they spend years accumulating wealth and power for themselves. But Ted Cruz just took the first step in shutting down the swamp for good.
From Daily Wire:
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) introduced a constitutional amendment on Tuesday to impose term limits on members of Congress…
“Terms limits bring about accountability that is long overdue and I urge my colleagues to advance this amendment along to the states so that it may be quickly ratified and become a constitutional amendment,” the statement added.
Sen. Cruz introduced an amendment that would put term limits for members of Congress. If passed, senators would get two terms of six years. Members of the House would serve for three terms of two years.
The Republican blasted the current arrangement, which allows politicians to serve in Congress for life. He said that our government is run by “a small group of special interests and lifelong, permanently entrenched politicians.”
Term limits would strike a blow against the corrupt Washington establishment. But they have never been passed, because the measure has to be passed by the very people who would receive term limits! Congress had no trouble passing term limits… on the president.
But would these swamp creatures pass an amendment that would kick them out of Congress and erase their ability to get rich off our backs? Not likely. It would take a strong, unprecedented push by lawmakers and state leaders to make this a reality.
But it’s not impossible.
Key Takeaways:
- Ted Cruz introduced an amendment to set term limits for members of Congress.
- The measure would amend the Constitution, limiting how long someone can serve.
- Cruz accused the current leadership of being corrupt, “lifelong” politicians.
