The impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump is in full swing, and Democrats are hoping they can convince the Senate to convict.
Some believe that after the opening arguments, leftist politicians have a better chance than previously expected. President Joe Biden even guessed that possibly “some minds may have changed.”
But that isn’t what Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) sees.
Cruz, who has supported the former POTUS from the beginning, has come down hard on impeachment proceedings in recent weeks.
He believed from the start that Trump would be acquitted, and impeachment-hungry Democrats were simply putting on a circus with this trial. Many Republicans still call it “unconstitutional.”
And recently, Cruz had a sit-down with Trump’s legal team — and what he heard left no doubt in his mind.
From Fox News:
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Fox News “@ Night” on Thursday that there is no chance that former President Trump will be convicted for inciting last month’s riot at the Capitol, but laid out how he believes Trump’s legal team should present their argument.
Cruz said he and Trump’s lawyers had about “an hour-long huddle” and Sens. Lindsey Graham and Mike Lee attended as well.
They discussed the case at hand, and Cruz recommended that Trump’s team cite the rhetoric used by top-tier Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
He said to take some of the more questionable statements from these leaders, and compare them to Trump’s words on Jan. 6.
Specifically, Cruz wants the team to point out Donald’s following quote:
I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.
In the end, Sen. Cruz concluded that there’s really no chance Trump will be convicted in the Senate. Obviously, he thinks Trump’s attorneys are on the right track and Democrats don’t have the votes.
He isn’t the only top GOP member to think this way, either.
This week, Sen. Graham said on “Hannity” that the Democrat case didn’t cut the mustard — in fact, he believes Democrats have even less support than they did before.
On the flip side, it was initially reported that Trump himself wasn’t too happy with his team’s performance on day one.
But either way, it’ll all be over soon. And currently, it doesn’t seem like Democrats have the inside track to impeachment, though we can’t know for sure until all the votes are in.
- Sen. Ted Cruz had “an hour-long huddle” with Donald Trump’s legal team.
- Cruz offered some advice, and then concluded Democrats have “no chance” to convict the former President.
- Other Republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham believe Dems have less support now, and Trump will be acquitted.
