Border encounters with illegal immigrants have spiked to all-time highs under Joe Biden’s reign in the White House. His administration continues to approve the open-border policies used by the Department of Homeland Security.
Critics have complained that the federal government purposely fails to report numbers of illegal immigrants on time as requested by Congress. Republicans believe this tactic is intended to hide just how badly Biden’s administration has failed to secure the border.
Republicans want to stop this practice so the American people can know the truth about what is happening at the southern border as millions of illegal immigrants flow into the states. The crisis now affects every state in the continental U.S. and Republicans want accountability from federal agencies.
GOP leadership blames now-impeached DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for failing to report illegal crossing numbers to Congress in a timely manner. Republicans have introduced legislation to stop his secretive actions.
From The Daily Wire:
New legislation set to be introduced in Congress would set a deadline for the Department of Homeland Security to release monthly border encounter statistics and slash the salary of the agency’s secretary if it’s not met.
Mayorkas regularly plots to release border statistics at times when the media is less likely to widely report the condemning information. He dumps the statistics on Friday and Saturdays which are traditionally slow news days, even with viral social media in play.
Mayorkas has also been roundly criticized for routinely releasing border encounter information in a secretive manner. Reports show that in the past six months, these figures have been kept under wraps by DHS up to three weeks after the end of the previous month.
This pattern of secrecy and calculated releases needs to stop, according to Congresswoman Stephanie Bice (R-OK). The legislation she is sponsoring would require the agency to release monthly border encounter numbers within seven days of the end of each month.
Failure to deliver the data on time would result in the cutting of the salary of the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security by 25% the following month.
“Our border is out of control and the lack of accountability is fostering chaos,” Bice said. “My legislation, the Timely Reporting Act, restores transparency and forces the Biden Administration to report illegal migration data in a timely fashion.”
Bice pushed accountability to another level by adding into the legislation the element where lack of transparency will result in the financial penalty. Mayorkas could be hit hard in his paycheck.
Mayorkas’ consistency in delaying the release of information could cost him plenty. His salary is $203,500 annually. If he were to miss the information release deadline for 12 consecutive months his paycheck could theoretically be cut by more than $50,000.
“If they fail to do their job, they will be held accountable and face cuts to their salaries,” Bice said.
The United States is suffering under the Biden administration as more than 10 million people have crossed the border during his term in office. This includes an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrant “gotaways” who could be anywhere in the states.
These border crisis figures include a record-breaking number of Chinese nationals crossing the border and a 1,000 percent increase in illegal immigration from a variety of countries including Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and the Dominican Republic.
Key Takeaways:
- A Republican bill in Congress would slash the salary of Mayorkas if he doesn’t comply.
- The now-impeached DHS secretary often withholds border immigration information.
- The GOP bill would hold him accountable with every missed deadline going forward.
