Colombian Senator Gustavo Petro is one of the leaders of a far-left socialist movement, and he’s even an ex-member of the highly controversial rebel group called M19.
And he’s telling Americans who he would vote for in November’s election if he could.
This could be pretty concerning for this candidate’s supporters.
Here’s the exchange between CNN host Juan Carlos Lopez and Petro:
‘Did you endorse Joe Biden as a candidate for President of the United States?’
‘Well, if I could vote, which I cannot. I’m not a citizen of the United States.
But if I could vote in the United States, in the interest of my Latin American people, I would vote for Biden, without a doubt.’
Democrat presumptive nominee Joe Biden wants to gather as much support as possible before November. But from socialists? Maybe not.
According to a Reuters report, Petro spent “years” with the aforementioned M19 rebel group, which stormed the country’s Supreme Court in 1985. This reportedly led to the loss of over 100 people.
His political career hasn’t been exactly stellar, either.
According to a Colombian media report, Petro was the “least popular” mayor in the entire country when he was Mayor of Bogota.
And now he’s voicing support for Joe Biden, which could prompt a lot of questions and concerns.
This isn’t the first time a far-left leader has backed Biden, either; socialist and Marxist leaders have stood up for Joe in recent months.
Biden hasn’t directly acknowledged any of them (as far as we know), but it’s definitely something President Trump could use to his advantage come election time.
If Trump points to the radical leftists who have supported his opponent, that could curry much favor among American citizens.
- Socialist leader Senator Gustavo Petro says he would vote for Biden, “without a doubt.”
- Petro has a complicated history, which includes being a member of a violent rebel group called M19.
- Biden may not want the support of so many far-left leaders, as American voters might see this as a definite problem.
