When Donald Trump was president, he often called CNN “very fake news.” The cable network, once revered as a leader in world news, had descended into bitter, partisan propaganda. Its hosts frequently embarrassed themselves by exposing an upsetting biased against Trump, conservatives, or anyone right of center.
But things took a turn for the worse once Trump left the White House. Without the “bad orange man” to complain about, CNN lost the one demo they still had: angry liberals.
Meanwhile, they avoided holding Biden and his many failures accountable, upsetting other viewers. Then there was the string of scandals that took down a number of longtime staff. Now, they are faced with a grim reality.

Fox News Channel kicked off the new year as the No. 1 basic cable network from Jan. 3-9, 2022, as CNN saw staggering declines, shedding nearly 90% of its early 2021 audience in multiple categories.
CNN averaged 2.7 million viewers from Jan. 4-10 last year as the network experienced a brief post-election spike but plummeted to only 548,000 average viewers last week, for a stunning year-over-year drop of 80% of its total audience.
You can’t sugarcoat numbers like that. Last year, CNN was enjoying a viewership of about 2 million viewers. But soon after Sleepy Joe took office, their longtime viewers simply disappeared.
I guess the Biden supporters quickly learned how idiotic they were to vote for him and stuck their heads in the sand. And the people who tuned in to get their daily dose of Trump hate were starved of content.
The result is that CNN has lost 90% of its viewership from a year ago. That is a drop so bad, we’re surprised the network is still around. Donald Trump warned the liberal media that if he were to go, they would go out of business. Perhaps that’s why was relatively quiet over 2021—aside from events the MSM would avoid?
You have to wonder how CNN is going to recover from this. We know they are planning to launch a streaming service, following a well-worn road by nearly every other media company. Chris Wallace dumped Fox News to join this endeavor. He’s probably regretting that choice right about now.
Sadly, had CNN stuck to hard-hitting news that was free of political bias, they’d probably be doing much better right now. But we’ve watched them slip into petty partisan coverage for years now, only getting worse during the last administration. Now, they might not be able to come back.
