Rep. Liz Cheney has been on the GOP hot seat for a while now. The backlash kicked into high gear after she voted to impeach President Donald Trump.
Cheney has accumulated plenty of critics in recent months, and House Republicans have pushed for some form of punishment.
Now, that punishment could be just hours away.
Republicans appear to be in a position to end Rep. Cheney’s tenure, and they’ve already got a possible replacement lined up: Rep. Elise Setanik (NY).
While a few GOP members have supported Cheney to this point, many want her to face the consequences.
This will go beyond a slap on the wrist, too, as they’re calling for the anti-Trump politician’s complete removal.
From Fox News:
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Monday sent a letter to House Republicans telling them to expect a vote in their Wednesday conference meeting to remove Rep. Liz Cheney as the conference chair.
McCarthy has been preparing for this for several weeks.
He championed Stefanik to get her ready to possibly replace Cheney, and this letter appears to be a call to arms.
McCarthy warned against more “relitigating” and that it’s now time to “seize the future.” To him, this involves a change in leadership.
The vote to recall the Conference Chair happens tomorrow, and that’s when Cheney’s fate will be decided.
Rep. Cheney was one of several Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 incident at the Capitol. And she continued to accuse Trump of contributing to the violence.
This didn’t sit well with her fellow GOP leaders. It didn’t sit well with millions of Conservative voters, either.
Ironically, McCarthy helped Cheney avoid a previous removal attempt, but it seems the House Minority Leader has had a change of heart.
Now he’s on board with the “recall Cheney” movement, and he’s heeding the calls of his colleagues.
At this point, many Republicans across the country support the idea: get rid of Cheney, and replace her with a better GOP leader.
