Throughout last year (and into this year) California’s governor and officials have singled out churches.
Their lockdown measures have restricted residents’ First Amendment right to worship.
It has resulted in numerous, costly legal battles. Churches have been forced to fight for their rights, all the way to the Supreme Court.
The good news is, the courts have almost always sided with these churches. Finally, they ruled California can no longer mandate any more restrictions on churches.
And, as an added bonus, it has to pay for these churches’ legal fees.
From Fox News:
The state of California has agreed not to impose greater coronavirus restrictions on church gatherings than it does on retail establishments in a pair of settlements that provide more than $2 million in fees to lawyers who challenged the rules as a violation of religious freedom.
The state of California, after losing most of its legal battles against churches, must pay their legal fees.
It is a typical result in major court battles. When a person (or church) is forced to defend itself from an enemy and wins, they are often compensated.
After all, they didn’t ask to go to court to defend themselves. It was California that imposed these restrictions and put churches in such a hard position.
The First Amendment forbids the government from “prohibiting the free exercise” of religion. But that seems to be what Newsom and other officials did.
Now, churches in California can enjoy the same rights they had prior to 2020. And they won’t find themselves in further financial difficulty because they had to go to court.
You have to wonder if Democratic leaders were trying to shut down churches for good with their orders. After all, churches usually collect financial support during services. But when they are not allowed to hold services, how can they keep going?
On top of that, they were looking at millions of dollars of legal fees, just to defend their rights.
Democrats couldn’t have created a better way to exterminate churches unless they planned it. But, wait a minute, they did.
Thankfully, Democrat leaders in California did not get away with their schemes to suppress our First Amendment. And they’ll have to cover the bill.
- California will pay $2 million to cover the legal fees of various churches.
- The courts ruled the state could not shut down churches, violating the First Amendment.
- The payment will ensure churches aren’t financially ruined for defending their rights.
