Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has a challenging month ahead. The debates are just around the corner, and both candidates will have to face a bevy of tough questions.
But Biden might also have to defend some of his previous claims, a few of which have been questioned by fact-checkers. And he’ll have to be careful not to misspeak.
Because unfortunately for his campaign, he might’ve just encountered another hurdle:
Back in October 2019, Joe claimed he “got started out” at a historically black college. He said this at Wilson High School in Florence, which was founded in 1866 by a rights group for black children.
And as he said before the South Caroline Democratic primary:
I got started out of an HBCU, Delaware State — now, I don’t want to hear anything negative about Delaware State. They’re my folks.
Most people assumed he meant he began his collegiate career at Delaware State. In other words, he went to school there.
However, Delaware State director of news service Carlos Holmes said this really isn’t true.
He clarified the situation in an email to the Washington Times:
Vice President Biden did not attend DSU.
However he was the Commencement keynote speaker in 2003 and , and during the former he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree.
Furthermore, in Biden’s 2007 memoir, “Promises to Keep,” he never once mentions Delaware State University.
Now, it’s feasible that Joe was referring to his speaking engagement or his honorary degree, and he thinks either is a “starting” point for his political career.
But that really isn’t what it sounded like to most listeners.
This isn’t the first time Biden has either misspoke or been caught in an apparent lie. For instance, he once claimed he was the first in his family to attend college, and that his relatives were coal miners.
He later recanted both statements.
Then there was the time Biden claimed he was arrested in the ’70s in South Africa when trying to visit Nelson Mandela in prison.
But after several sources called the story into question, journalists couldn’t seem to find any reports or accounts of that arrest. Biden was a U.S. senator at the time.
With such a history, it might be difficult for some American citizens to believe Biden’s claims these days. And that could have a negative impact on his campaign.
- Last year, Joe Biden claimed he “got started out” at Delaware State University, a historically black college.
- But the university’s news director clarified that Biden was never a student there.
- It’s possible Biden was referring to his speaking engagement or his honorary degree. But he does have a recorded history of misspeaking and questionable claims.
